SARDANA Fast-Forwards Internet by 2 Generations
The solution is now ready for field trials
ESPOO, Finland, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Remember dial-up? How did you spend your time waiting for old-fashioned modem-based Internet connections to download content? That is how today's Internet connections will appear, when you switch to next-generation PON solution (passive optical networking). Users can share high-definition videos in a fraction of the time. In fact, SARDANA will offer more capacity to a single user than many companies are using today.
The European Union funded the development project, called Scalable Advanced Ring-based passive Dense Access Network Architecture (SARDANA, www.ict-sardana.eu), which is now entering the field trial phase. France Telecom will be the first company to test the SARDANA solution in the field. The 3-year global research and development will come to an end next year, and the solution will be showcased at the FTTH Council Exhibit in Milan, Italy on February 9 – 11, 2011.
By connecting metro and access networks into one, the ring-based WDM-PON solution will revolutionize the capacity, density and reach of traditional PON solutions.
More capacity
ITU-T G.984 GPON technology supports one downstream and one upstream wavelengths, and offers a possibility for an 'overlay' wavelength for RF video services. The truly passive WDM/TDM-PON solution explodes the capacity limits.
The new solution offers 32 lambdas (wavelengths) at 10Gbps downstream and at 2.5Gbps upstream from a single SARDANA ring fibre. It grows the bandwidth capacity of the SARDANA PON over 128 times compared to ITU-T G.984 GPON.
Extended reach
SARDANA extends the reach of fibre connection up to 100 kilometers (60 miles) compared to a traditional GPON standards. The new solution also adds the number of homes served for up to 1000 homes. This means that a single optical-line-terminal port (OLT) will serve 15 to 30 times more consumers than today, with a new level of reliability and flexibility.
"The SARDANA project shakes up the PON technology and it brings the potential for a new suite of high-quality services to our customers," says Dr. Philippe Chanclou, France Telecom. "We are very excited to start the field trials in Lannion (Brittany, France) close to our Orange Labs facilities, to demonstrate both the urban and rural scenarios of SARDANA."
"Tellabs innovates constantly to enable our customers to stay ahead of competition," says Dan Kelly, executive vice president, Tellabs global products. "SARDANA is a logical evolution of PON to converge and simplify metro and access networks with wavelength management."
