SANS' Baltimore Security Training Event, SANSFIRE, Targets Online Cybercrime
ISC Handler and Forensic Expert, John Bambenek, to Share Insight into How to Remove Criminal Control from an Infrastructure
BETHESDA, Md., May 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- SANS Institute, the global leader in information security training, today announced Internet Storm Center handler (ISC) and forensic expert, John Bambenek will present at the SANSFIRE security training event taking place June 13 – 20 in Baltimore, MD. Bambenek's talk, The State of the Takedown: Disrupting Online Cybercrime, will focus on how recent successful takedown operations of entire malware families of operations and botnets were accomplished. This talk will also discuss other disruptive techniques, besides takedowns, that can be used to protect organizations.
According to Bambenek, senior threat researcher at Fidelis Cybersecurity, "We have all seen the splashy headlines detailing large threats subjected to takedowns only to re-emerge days (or hours) later. However a few takedowns, such as Gameover Zeus and CryptoLocker, have achieved long term results. Understanding why these takedowns were successful, and why others were not, is essential to disrupt cybercrime operations. It is only through greater intelligence sharing can we increase the likelihood of takedown success."
Bambenek joins an impressive line-up of ISC handlers who will present at SANSFIRE. ISC handlers will share insight into the newest cyber hazards and cover such topics as Attacks by BroBot against the US Financial Markets, "Network Security as Counterinsurgency" Replacing The Art of War with FM 3-24, Cyber Counter Intelligence and Deception: Toward Adaptive Defense, and much more. For those just beginning their information security career as well as highly seasoned cyber security professionals, the more than 40 cyber security courses featured at SANSFIRE offers something for everyone.

About the Internet Storm Center
For more than 10 years, SANS' Internet Storm Center has been providing free analysis and warning to the community on the latest cyber threats and internet security issues. The ISC is staffed by approximately 40 volunteers, representing 8 countries and many industries. The most prominent feature of the ISC is the daily "Handler Diary" which is prepared by one of the incident handlers and summarizes the events of the day. It is frequently the first public source for new attack trends and actively facilitates cooperation by soliciting more information to understand particular attacks better.
