Sanctuary Belize and TV Star Excited About Belize's Sea Protection
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Sanctuary Belize, a leader in Belize Real Estate eco-friendly growth, is pleased to announce a new ban on trawling in the crystal blue Caribbean waters of our country. This ban will be key to the growth of Belize as the premiere destination for environmentally concerned investors.
This complete and permanent ban is a very important step toward safeguarding the world's oceans, and we feel it is significant that Belize, a country so focused on respecting and preserving the environment, is one of the very first nations to take the lead in this important global initiative.
Bottom trawling is an incredibly destructive form of fishing. Bottom trawlers use large, weighted nets to clear-cut the ocean floor, devastating and destroying all coral communities and anything else in their path.
These destructive shrimp trawls, which until this ban have been conducted in Belize, capture and kill more untargeted species than almost any other type of commercial fishing. Thousands of sea turtles, marine mammals and fish are caught in shrimp trawlers around the world every year.
The ban, which went into effect December 31, 2010 will greatly protect the World heritage Site status of our one of a kind Belize Barrier Reef System, the second largest coral reef system in the world after Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
Ted Danson, a TV star from the show Cheers and a board member of Oceana, the world's largest international ocean conservation organization, says "Kudos to Belize, and here's hoping that more countries follow its lead to reduce their destructive fishing footprint."
