Salt Lake Comic Con Calls All Super Heroes, Runners and Fans To Support the Fight Against Childhood Cancer
- Salt Lake Comic Con to sponsor third annual Millie's Princess Foundation 5K Princess Run/Walk on June 21, 2014 -
SALT LAKE CITY, June 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Because cancer is a royal pain!
Today, Salt Lake Comic Con (http://saltlakecomiccon.com/) announced they are joining the fight against childhood cancer by sponsoring the 2014 Millie's Princess Foundation's third annual Millie's Princess 5K run and walk on June 21, 2014 at Sugarhouse Park.
The race begins at 7:30 am MST.
Millie's Princess Foundation helps families with the financial fallout from childhood cancer. The foundation's mission is to raise millions of dollars to help families that have children with cancer so they can focus on their children's fight against cancer, not the financial fallout from medical and peripheral expenses.
"We believe it's important to be heroes in our own communities to make Utah a better place to live, work and play," said Dan Farr, Founder and CEO of Salt Lake Comic Con. "Millie's Princess Foundation is doing wonderful things for kids suffering from these horrible diseases and we are proud to support such a great cause."
In 2012 Millie Flamm was diagnosed with cancer. Millie loved princesses and in 2012 Millie's friends and neighbors organized the first Millie's Princess 5K run/walk to help offset the financial strain on her family. Participants dressed up in princess and other costumes in honor of Millie's fondness for Disney princesses. The event drew more than 400 participants and raised $13,000 in cash donations, an additional $10,000 matching grant, and $7,000 of in-kind donations and services.
In 2013 Millie lost her battle with cancer. The race was still held and drew more than 800 participants. It became a tradition for participants to dress in costumes in honor of Millie. This year's race is expected to draw more than 1,000 racers. Participants are again encouraged to dress up in their favorite costumes. Everyone joining the event gets a free pass to Salt Lake Comic Con and almost 100% of proceeds go to help those in need.
"We appreciated the support we got from friends, family and the community and realize how important it is for children going through cancer treatment and their families to be able to focus on getting better," said Brady Flamm, Millie's father and the CEO of Millie's Princess Foundation. "Millie's legacy lives on through this foundation and your generous donations. You can be assured that all race proceeds and other donations go directly to families with children fighting cancer and other life-threatening illnesses."
