BOSTON, Oct. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Salsify, the world's leading product experience management (PXM) platform, today announced its participation in Guppy Tank, an event aimed at cultivating interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among Boston Public School middle school students, at its Boston headquarters today. Originally piloted by Salsify and run by Building Impact in collaboration with Tech Underwriting Greater Good (TUGG) and Boston Public Schools, this year's Guppy Tank will pair 420 students with volunteers from 20 diverse tech companies in Greater Boston to learn app development in a hands-on educational environment.
"We are enormously proud to see Guppy Tank double in size from last year and look forward to a day of hands-on learning and idea sharing with these students," said Jason Purcell, co-founder and CEO of Salsify. "Salsify began Guppy Tank and partnered with the Boston Foundation and TUGG as we believe we - the greater tech community - can and should play a role in advancing STEM education for all children. We hope many of the participants we meet on Tuesday will leave the event with a goal of establishing a future STEM career here in Boston."
Students participating in the event will be tasked with creating an app that can assist with establishing and encouraging healthy living habits in their community. The challenges ties in with the sixth grade STEM curriculum in Boston Public Schools and will expose students to a wide range of skills and lessons, such as design methods, market research, engineering, marketing, and application prototyping and design. At the end of the program, students will present their prototype to a group of judges in a venture capital-like pitch. Prizes will be awarded.
"Guppy Tank provides our sixth-grade students the rare opportunity to experience STEM hands-on, while learning valuable problem solving and analytical skills," said Makeeba McCreary, Managing Director and Senior Advisor of External Affairs at Boston Public Schools. "Aligning this year's app challenge with healthy living and the sixth-grade curriculum helps reinforce classroom lessons while getting these students excited about a potential future career in Boston's rich tech scene."
Guppy Tank was piloted by Salsify in 2016 with a group of 15 students and a goal of fostering diversity and interest in the field. Last year, with the support from The Boston Foundation and TUGG, Building Impact partnered with Boston Public Schools to bring the GuppyTank to scale with 10 companies hosting over 200 students. This year, more 20 classes from nine middle schools across Boston are participating.
