Safety Heralded at Castle Hayne Cement Terminal
CASTLE HAYNE, N.C., Sept. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL) celebrated an exemplary safety performance by Roanoke Cement Company's (RCC) Castle Hayne Terminal last Thursday at the facility. Commissioner Cherie Berry presented the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) "flag" to Terminal Manager Dave Kreitinger and Terminal Operator, James Branch, for ongoing, effective workplace safety and health management systems. The Castle Hayne Terminal has not had a lost time accident in nearly 15 years.

"I commend Roanoke Cement Company for its commitment to safety in the workplace," said Commissioner Berry. "You can tell a lot about a company by how they treat their employees, and Roanoke Cement Company is truly an extraordinary company both in terms of employee relations and workplace health and safety. We wish parent company, Titan America, continued success as they work through the regulatory process for its proposed Carolinas Cement plant in Castle Hayne and welcome the many good – and safe -- jobs the new plant will bring to New Hanover County."
The SHARP program acknowledges businesses with outstanding safety and health programs in North Carolina that comply voluntarily with the applicable standards. Titan America's Mid-Atlantic Business Unit President, Robert Sells, credits the company's employees who consistently put safety first.
"Safety is steeped in our culture, from the bottom up and top down," says Sells. "It's a combination of technology, maintenance and vigilance that produce this terrific result." Both Castle Hayne and RCC's Winston-Salem Terminal sites were previously recognized by NCDOL for their excellent safety performance and each has achieved gold safety status in North Carolina.
