Rutgers Business School invites Big 10 peers to collaborate on undergraduate business education
Conference brings together academia and industry to share ideas for better preparing undergraduate students to lead and succeed in the business world
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., Oct. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Rutgers Business School will host a three-day conference beginning Oct. 26 to explore ways industry and educators can work together to ensure that students are receiving the most relevant training for careers in the business world.
Administrators and faculty from business schools at Big 10 universities will join corporate recruiters and senior executives for discussions on such topics as job trends, assisting faculty in developing effective programs and internationalizing curriculum.
The Innovations in Undergraduate Business Education Conference shows another side of the Big 10 Conference. When they are admitted to the Big 10, schools get entry to the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, a consortium of academic resource-sharing.
Marty Markowitz, senior associate dean of the undergraduate program at Rutgers Business School-New Brunswick and conference organizer, wanted to take advantage of Big 10 connection to collaborate with other business schools in developing a streamlined approach to educating students.
The conference is geared to high school, community college and undergraduate educators.
"We're competitors, but we're all in the same field," Markowitz said. "What I'm suggesting is that higher education should work with high schools and industry to ensure that students are prepared for the complexities of the business world with relevant curriculum and skills."
Interested school administrators still have a chance to attend. Click here to register.
Markowitz has also invited a mix of state officials, educators, school administrators and business people to participate in the conference. "My sense is we can really improve the U.S. economy if we do things right," he said.
The conference opens on Monday, Oct. 26, with a reception at the new Rutgers Business School and remarks from Rutgers Business School and Rutgers University administrators. The reception will be followed by a tour of the state-of-the-art Rutgers Business School building in Piscataway.
On Tuesday morning, the conference will open with welcoming remarks from Rutgers Business School Dean Lei Lei, Rutgers University President Robert Barchi and New Jersey Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno.
Their words will be prelude to a keynote address by Gary Cohen, executive vice president and president of global health and development at BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company). Cohen is scheduled to speak about "Business Models for Positive Societal Impact."
A series of panel discussions on Tuesday will examine job trends and highlight innovative programs that are redefining the way business is taught. "Innovations in B-Education" will feature speakers from McDonough School of Business, University of Nebraska as well as Rutgers. Deans and advisory board members will exchange best practices in a special afternoon session in New York City.
Panelists participating in the event will offer a range of perspectives. The panels will include executives, faculty as well as members of the boards of advisors to Big 10-affiliated business schools.
Two more panel discussions and a keynote address by Anant Agarwal, CEO of edX, will cap off the event at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Brunswick on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Participants in a discussion on "The Pillars of Future Business Education" will discuss online tools and digital techniques that have been successfully incorporated into business education and a second panel of New Jersey educators, administrators and the director of the New Jersey Department of Education's Office of Career Readiness will discuss outreach to non-business school constituencies.
Markowitz said the panel on outreach will explore how high schools and community colleges can better prepare students for business school and how educators can work together to integrate their programs to produce high-quality, successful students and business leaders.
