BROOKFIELD, Ill., March 16, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Ronald J. Szymanski is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen from among a pool of the most prominent professionals and are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Retiring from the field of criminal law in 2012, Mr. Szymanski initially earned a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice from the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1969. He was drafted in the United States Anny in 1970, serving in Korea in the Military Police Unit until 1972. Mr. Szymanski's service in the armed forces inspired him to pursue a career in law, and he subsequently obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, now a part of the University of Illinois, in 1976. Afterwards he applied for work with the FBI and Office of Public Defender and was hired as an assistant Public Defender.
Licensed to practice law by the Illinois State Bar Association in 1977, Mr. Szymanski began his career as a deputy sheriff in the theft court of the Cook County Sheriff's Department in Chicago. He later worked as an assistant public defender in the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender from 1978 until his retirement in 2012. During this tenure, Mr. Szymanski was admitted to practice law by the Supreme Court of the United States in 1999.
Mr. Szymanski attributes much of his success to hard work, his military experience, and continuing his legal education through seminars and trial practice courses over the course of his career. One of the most rewarding things he had discovered about being a public defender was that there were never discussions about fees and there were always clients, so he always remained busy. Mr. Szymanski considers the key to his professional growth to have been researching his clients and their situations before he met with them in person.
Mr. Szymanski hopes to be remembered as someone who was good at his job and was successful in his research. One of his most important cases, Ronald Kitchen v. Jon Burge, occurred in 2009. Jon Burge was a former Chicago police officer who was involved in cases of police brutality and the torture of suspects. One of the young men who had been wrongfully accused and incarcerated filed a lawsuit again Burge, and Mr. Szymanski worked on the case, eventually garnering the young man a large sum of money.
Alongside his primary responsibilities, Mr. Szymanski has been involved with a number of other professional and civic endeavors. He further flourished as a specialist made and rose to acting sergeant. Also, he helped in the recreation room by handing out gaming equipment and spinning records. He also visited a Korean orphanage on a few occasions to meet with the Korean children orphans and play with them. After receiving his Honorable Discharge military duty, he was called back to military service and served an additional two weeks at Fort McCoy in the state of Wisconsin. This was because his early release was two weeks too soon from the 19 months of military service he had to complete to meet his 2 year obligation to serve in the military. Furthermore, Mr. Szymanski is currently a member of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as a result of his military service in the U.S. Army. He has worked as a precinct captain for the Democratic Party and worked on elections days at the voting stations, observing the election procedures.
For excellence in his career, Mr. Szymanski has been the recipient of a number of honors and accolades. Honored as a Marquis Who's Who Top Professional, he has also been selected for inclusion in the 10th edition of Who's Who in American Law. Additionally, Mr. Szymanski has been recognized with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor conferred by Marquis Who's Who.
Mr. Szymanski was born on June 6, 1947 in Chicago to Joseph Szymanski and Josephine Kosterna. His family also includes his brother, Norbert, and his sister, Nancy. Now enjoying his retirement, Mr. Szymanski dedicates his free time to playing golf.
