LOS ANGELES, April 9, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Ron Redell, president of DoubleLine Group, discusses his career in asset management, the creation from scratch of DoubleLine's operational infrastructure (including the firm's mutual fund company) and the DoubleLine culture in a Sherman Show podcast recorded March 22.

In a conversation with Jeffrey Sherman, deputy chief investment officer of DoubleLine, and Sam Lau, portfolio manager, Mr. Redell explains that during his undergraduate years at Stanford, where he was a defensive back on the Cardinal football team, he initially saw himself playing professional football, trying out notably for the Indianapolis Colts and Barcelona Dragons.
When he realized football probably wasn't in his long-term future, he considered going into law, but an internship at a law firm dissuaded him from that path. Instead he found his way into the financial industry, first as a financial advisor for Wells Fargo before becoming an executive in the mutual fund platform of Robertson Stephens. From there, he joined TCW, eventually becoming president of the firm's mutual fund company, presiding over the unit's growth in assets. There he got to know the firm's star investment manager Jeffrey Gundlach. With Mr. Gundlach's departure from that firm, Mr. Redell became one of the more than 40 financial professionals to jump ship from TCW to join in the launch of DoubleLine Capital under Mr. Gundlach's leadership.
Today DoubleLine manages $130 billion in assets and employs 250 people. In the podcast, Mr. Redell describes some of the early challenges in setting up the operational infrastructure and strategic relationships as well as relationship management, client service and other non-investment management operations at the firm.
Messrs. Redell, Sherman and Lau also discuss the firm's rejection of the fixation on asset growth which predominates at many firms in the investment management industry; the advantage of being an independent, private company; importance of both consistency in DoubleLine's management and cultivation of younger generations of talented people throughout the firm; and other aspects of DoubleLine's corporate culture.
