Phoenix Mountain, named after the ship "Phoenix" that brought some of the early settlers to North Carolina, may be sold
JEFFERSON, N.C., Nov. 24, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Located in a county named after Revolutionary War patriot Samuel Ashe, Phoenix Mountain was named after the ship that brought the mountain's first settlers, the Ellers, from Germany in the 1800's. Complementing its captivating history, the property offers awe-inspiring scenery including views of the North Fork of the New River, an American Heritage River, which curls around the northern base of the mountain.
This unparalleled 412-acre estate is nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and can be distinguished by its 300-foot sheer rock face. A study conducted a few years ago by botanists from the University of Oregon discovered a rare plant specimen flourishing on the expansive cliff face. This type of "Creeping Avens," as it is called, is found in the western region of the U.S. in the Rocky Mountains. The scientists reasoned that the unique climate on the NW facing cliff face of Phoenix Mountain permits the plant to grow and survive, coining its nickname as the "Rocky Mountains of the East." The mountain has also been given the highest designation a site can receive by being recognized as "Nationally Significant" by the N.C. Natural Heritage Program, a unit of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The Nature Conservancy, an international non-profit conservation organization, and N.C. DENR found 17 rare plant species, three Federally Endangered species, and one State Threatened species on the mountain.
Meandering along the private roads of the property are native trout streams, bordering rock walls, black walnut, pine, and other hardwood forests, and a park with a stocked fishing pond. There is also an abundance of large American chestnut trees that survived the blight well beyond normal expectancy. Perched at the top of the estate is an over 10,000-square-foot Old English style manor and guest house. Modeled after the Cotswolds of the English countryside and currently used as a wedding destination, the manor consists of 7 bedrooms, 8 baths, a home theater room, spa and exercise facility, children's nursery, multiple master suites, and more.

A geodetic survey marker, like the one atop Grandfather Mountain, was placed on the summit of the mountain in 1979, deeming it as a benchmark, geodetic monument, and triangulation station for use in the N.C. Geodetic Surveys.
Phoenix Mountain is located 3 miles from the Ashe County Regional Airport and the historic village of Jefferson, N.C., and only 20 miles from Boone, N.C. and Appalachian State University.
