She is a Gold Star mother herself- Susan and her husband of thirty seven years lost their only child, Pfc. Keith Jesse Moore during his service in the U.S. Army in Iraq in 2006. Pfc. Moore, along with twenty-two other Veterans a day died by suicide.
Since the death of her son, Susan has become an active advocate for suicide prevention and education. One way Susan is active in suicide prevention is by presenting her documentary, "Broken Hearts Lifted Spirits: Mothers of the Fallen Speak Their Truth." This film is about mothers who have lost children in the OEF/OIF wars. She uses this as an educational and training resource complete with a group facilitator's manual. Her film is a resource to teach individuals how to be an effective presence for those who have suffered trauma and loss and to raise awareness about the impact of war on families. She has presented Broken Hearts Lifted Spirits at conferences, to faith communities, Gold Star Families and uses it as part of her CPE curriculum. She is an effective public speaker and leader in the areas of chaplaincy, bereavement care, addiction and trauma recover and ministry to Veterans.
Throughout the course of her professional career, she was the Founding Director of a nonprofit ministry to those affected by AIDS in San Francisco called Living Waters HIV Ministry. Not only was she the Director, Susan also provided one on one pastoral care to individuals with HIV/AIDS, their loved ones, extended families and caregivers. She visited people in their homes, hospice facilities and hospitals throughout the Bay Area. She collaborated with other AIDS organizations and faith communities. Rev. Turley conducted many memorial services in churches, in hospitals and in homes. Susan also provided counseling to victims of violence, in addiction recovery and provided ministry to the homeless in collaboration with San Francisco Interfaith organizations.
Susan has been for many years and continues to "foster" children through Children International. She supports several Veterans organizations and environmental efforts for a cleaner and healthier world. In addition to her pastoral services, one of her spiritual practices is watercolor painting. Through her art, she has shown and sold several of her paintings. Susan hopes her paintings will bring "peace and inspiration to a world filled with too much suffering and violence."
Susan received a Master of Science in Education/Counseling from Suffolk University, completed two years of post-graduate training Family Systems Therapy and the course work for a Doctorate of Ministry with a focus on how faith communities can support coming-home Veterans and their families. Additionally, she earned certification as a licensed clinical social worker and earned a Master of Divinity from the Swedenborg School of Religion; now the Center for Swedenborgian Studies housed at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. She was one of the first women to be ordained in the Swedenborgian Church, in 1980.
After ordination, Susan worked as a pastoral counselor in the Turley and Associates Counseling Center in Newton, Massachusetts. She then went on to serve three parishes in Portland, Maine, Los Angeles and San Francisco, California. She entered into hospital chaplaincy work in the early '90s until she earned her certification as an ACPE Supervisor in 2001. Susan and her family have lived in several states throughout the United States. She traveled to Italy to study art. She has been to Mexico, Canada. Susan was a part of the National Council of Churches, Clergy Women's Peace and Reconciliation group. This group went to the Holy Land, Jordan, and Israel. They met to discuss peace efforts with faith leaders of all traditions. In particular Susan met with mothers and their families from Iraq during the war, who were guests living in Jordan. At this meeting stories of loss and hope were shared. Mothers were united out of a common experience of tragedy in a spirit of mutual compassion and understanding. This experience and the death of her only child are the motivating life events that continue to stir her conviction to be a healing presence for truth, justice and equity in the world.
