RetireSafe Blasts Newest Efforts to Rob Seniors of Their Earned Social Security and Medicare Benefits
WASHINGTON, Dec. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Representing 400,000 senior citizen supporters across America, RetireSafe President Thair Phillips today blasted the newest Washington proposals to reduce debt by "balancing the federal budget on the backs of older Americans." He called the combined efforts to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits "a full-blown abdication of decades of federal promises to the aged and aging members of our society."
"Changes to the minimum age requirements for participation in Social Security and Medicare will simply hurt the poorest and sickest of our seniors, and most likely the least able to work longer without Medicare benefits," Phillips said. He also noted, "Proposals to add additional means-testing to Medicare and to means-test Social Security benefits will turn these social insurance programs into nothing more than welfare." He added, "Those who have worked hard, saved and invested, who have sacrificed and forgone immediate pleasures to build a strong financial future now find themselves cheated of their earned benefits, benefits they have toiled 50 years or more to secure."
Phillips called the Chained-COLA proposal nothing more than "Theft-by-Deception." "Changing the already flawed and under-stated CPI/COLA formula we now have, one that has short-changed our seniors for decades, to one that is designed only to cut spending by squeezing beneficiaries is criminal," Phillips continued. "Seniors and military retirees deserve a fair and accurate COLA like the one called for in the CPI for Seniors Act, H.R. 1086," he added.
"The continued acceptance of the Affordable Care Act cuts to Medicare providers ($718 Billion), plus the proposal of additional cuts of $400 billion or more, will be tremendously harmful to all Medicare beneficiaries," Phillips stated. "It seems that older Americans have become the piggybank for every other federal program or tax break, and that's just wrong," he said.
"Phillips concluded, "Every senior and near-senior should oppose these cuts to 'entitlements- entitlements I am proud to say we have worked hard for years to earn."
