Rep. Fattah Announces More Than $10.7 Million in Grants for Neuroscience, Scientific and Medical Research in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), the top Democratic Appropriator for neuroscience and federal science agencies, announces that the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) will receive 20 grants totaling $10,777,491 for scientific and medical research projects.

"The grants to these nationally recognized institutions in our renowned University City district in West Philadelphia will enable them to continue cutting-edge research in neuroscience, medicine, other scientific endeavors and the Internet," Fattah said. "I'm proud to be leading the fight in Congress to keep our nation Number One in the world in science, technology, research and innovation."

These latest awards have been issued by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Health and Human Services through its National Institutes of Health (NIH). 

Fattah, Congressional champion for neuroscience, brain injury and brain disease research, announced that Penn will receive $2,126,161 for a Schizophrenia study while CHOP will get $557,262 to study obesity in adolescents with Down Syndrome, both from NIH. Fattah authored legislation last winter that raises the national priority for neuroscience research and coordinates it through the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Among other grants Fattah announced today, Drexel will receive $1,080,445 from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "TTP: Medium: Securing the Wireless Philadelphia Network." Penn will receive an NIH grant for $495,317 to study medication in black men with hypertension.

Overall, NSF's latest round of grants total more than $4 million -- five awards to Drexel for $2,073,135 and five awards to Penn for $1,938,694.

The National Institutes of Health is directing ten new grants to University City worth more than $6.7 million – eight awards to Penn for $5,514,109 and two awards to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for $1,251,553.

Fattah is the senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies, which oversees appropriations for the National Science Foundation, NOAA, NASA and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as well as the Departments of Commerce and Justice.
