Recovery Brands Delivers 600 Care Packages to Homeless Communities During Second Annual Bi-Coastal #GivingTuesday Initiative
Employees hit the streets of San Diego and Manhattan to hand deliver life-saving goods and information
SAN DIEGO, Nov. 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Recovery Brands, provider of digital addiction treatment resources, today announced that its employees will assemble and deliver necessity items to local homeless communities of downtown San Diego and Manhattan for the second year in a row. Donations from several local organizations, combined with internal funds, allowed the company to significantly expand its efforts from the previous event.
"We were astonished and humbled by the amount of positive feedback we received last year -- from care package recipients and employees alike -- so it was an extremely easy decision to repeat and amplify the initiative this year," said Katie Hajec, director of talent management at Recovery Brands. "Our business helps people every single day by putting useful, trusted information online, but there is something about getting out from behind your desk and interacting face-to-face with people during difficult times. We're all human and we all need that connection."
Through physical and informational aid, the company intends to help a largely underserved population with a high percentage of individuals in need of addiction treatment and/or mental health services. In San Diego alone, public data cited that nearly half of the unsheltered homeless population in 2015 suffered from a severe mental illness, alcohol abuse disability, or substance abuse disability. Unfortunately, the homeless population severely lacks resources to receive quality treatment. While cost is a rather evident barrier to access, a viable means to locate and evaluate practical treatment options is often an initial obstacle -- a large inspiration for the annual initiative.
This year's package recipients will enjoy bottled water, feminine hygiene products, gloves, granola bars, lip balm, potato chips, pre-packaged meal kits, socks, tangerines, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and wet wipes. Individuals will also find life-saving and uplifting information: a Recovery Brands-drafted care guide complete with local programs and/or facilities that aid the homeless in treatment for substance abuse, mental health or behavioral disorders; pamphlets containing information for community support groups and other general healthcare resources; and handwritten notes of encouragement by Recovery Brands employees.
Several local organizations joined in the company's efforts to increase the positive community impact by supplying additional care package items. Supporters include: Carmel Mountain Dentistry, Downtown SD Modern Dentistry, Prime Time Vending, Quartyard San Diego, San Diego Courtyard Marriott in the Gaslamp, San Diego Downtown Fellowship of Churches and Ministries, and The Dental Office of Dr. Steven Alper, DMD.
