SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., Nov. 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- "In Your Right Mind," a weekly radio program that features in-depth roundtable discussions of today's leading behavioral health headlines, aired an informative show called, "Moms Who Wine," on Sunday, October 29, at 5 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Talk Radio 790 AM KABC Los Angeles. The broadcast discussed the variety of reasons why mental health issues and problems with drinking can develop among new moms. The show is hosted by Tonmoy Sharma, M.B.B.S., M.Sc., founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sovereign Health, who provides an in-depth medical and clinical expertise, and co-host Stefanie Wilder-Taylor.
The broadcast, "Moms Who Wine," guest speakers included Dana Bowman and Susan Blank, M.D. Ms. Bowman is a long-time English teacher and part-time professor in the department of English at Bethany College, Kansas. Author of: "Bottled: A Mom's Guide to Early Recovery," and the popular momsieblog.com. She leads and presents workshops on both writing and addiction, with a special emphasis on being a woman in recovery while parenting young children. Dr. Blank is the Founder and Chief Medical Officer for the Atlanta Healing Center. A graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, she completed a residency in Psychiatry and Neurology at Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Blank is President of the Georgia Society of Addiction Medicine and serves on the Advisory Board of the Georgia Physician's Health Program. She is also a member of the Board of Directors for The Georgia Council on Alcohol and Drugs.
"Women in America are drinking far more than their mothers and grandmothers and their alcohol consumption is killing them in record numbers," said Dr. Sharma. "In 2013, more than a million women wound up in emergency rooms as a result of heavy drinking, with women in middle age most likely to suffer severe intoxication. And it's estimated that one in four U.S. children has an alcoholic parent."
"One thing we know about young girls between the ages of 12-17 is that they've now way caught up with boys. The girls smoke more cigarettes, they use more cocaine, they're more likely to drink and use prescription drugs, but they're use is binging," explained Ms. Bowman. "The amount and frequency of drinking is not part of the criteria for an addiction. The criteria are: do you have a problem stopping once you start, and do you have trouble staying stopped in between? As women become older and become mothers, they later realize they've had an issue with alcohol for a long time."
