WASHINGTON, July 11, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In the new issue of the Journal of Democracy (JoD), Olivier Roy, professor of social and political theory at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, writes, "Something irreversible [happened] in the Arab Spring. Whatever ups and downs may follow, we are witnessing the beginning of a process by which democratization is becoming rooted in Arab societies." His article "The Transformation of the Arab World" explores the paradoxical relationship between what he calls the "re-Islamization" of the region and the simultaneous emergence of "political secularism."
A cluster of articles on "Putinism Under Siege" look at the recent and surprising postelection protests in Russia, asking why they happened, who took part, and what they mean for Russia's future. In her opening essay "Implosion, Atrophy, or Revolution?," noted expert Lilia Shevtsova concludes that "Russia is now in a race against time." Because "the Russian system's demise is currently accelerating," she writes, the country's "political class and society do not have much time to find peaceful ways out of the current impasse before the system starts to unravel."
Elsewhere in the issue, Ethiopian prodemocracy leader and former federal judge Birtukan Midekssa reviews a new biography of Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi; E. Gyimah-Boadi and H. Kwasi Prempeh ask if Ghana's new status as an oil producer poses a threat to its democracy; and a set of three essays by international scholars examine "Hungary's Illiberal Turn."
