Project Green Schools Engages Students in Environmental Action with 'Race for the Planet: Virtual Home Edition'

BOSTON, April 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Project Green Schools is excited to announce the launch of "Race for the Planet: Virtual Home Edition," a new program to inspire students, schools and communities to create environmental change this spring.

The program, sponsored by National Grid, aims to engage participants in environmental action.  

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing and home quarantines, Project Green Schools – a national non-profit dedicated to developing the next generation of environmental leaders – has adapted its inaugural Race for the Planet to make it possible for students to participate virtually.

"This initiative provides a way for them to remain connected through experiential learning while promoting sustainability, conservation, and healthy lifestyles during this difficult time."

Race for the Planet offers a series of challenges related to Energy, Waste Management, Food/Agriculture, Water, Climate Change, Air and Sustainability.

Between April and June 2020, participants nationwide will engage, compete and make an impact with their environmental knowledge and creativity. Event highlights include an Upcycling Challenge, a Sustainable Scavenger Hunt, "Plogging," and more. Throughout, participants will post their activities and achievements on social media.

Virtual Opening/Closing Ceremonies will feature appearances from notable personalities, including: Enes Kanter (Boston Celtics), Bill McKibben (350.org), Phillipe Cousteau (son of Jacques Cousteau/EarthEcho), Jamie Margolin (Zero Hour), Ovie Mughelli (Atlanta Falcons), Ashlan Gorse Cousteau (Producer), Bob Perciasepe (C2es, former EPA), Valerie Sununu (First Lady of NH), Chloe Maxmin (divest Harvard, ME State Rep), Skye Flanigan (C-CHANGE) and Jon Powers (Clean Capital, former Chief Sustainability Officer for US Army), as well as music from Buffalo Tom and Brooke Leifer.

"Race for the Planet: Virtual Home Edition" also provides an opportunity for schools to raise funds for a local project to Green Up Their School/Community, as well as to support K-12 Environmental Learning initiatives for students nationwide.
