EXPERT ALERTS:
Sexual Harassment in Hollywood and the Film Industry
Kathleen Feeley
Professor, History
University of Redlands
Feeley is available to discuss sexual harassment in Hollywood and the film industry, in light of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the Roger Ailes and Bill O'Reilly incidents. Says Feeley: "Sexual harassment in Hollywood has a history as long as that of the industry itself: the industry was built, in part, on female harassment behind the scenes, female objectification in front of the cameras, with the use of celebrity gossip to both titillate and forewarn about the so-called 'casting couch.' The Harvey Weinstein scandal marks a sharp break with the past in its exposure and high-profile censure of an active (if flagging) film industry mogul. But the exposure and punishment of Harvey Weinstein (like that of Roger Ailes and Bill O'Reilly) won't effect lasting change unless it helps to diversify the industry power structure, workplaces, and narratives. And condemnation of Weinstein that includes statements about personal ignorance of rampant, industry-wide practices and rumors is a claiming of privilege that only reinforces the status quo that supported and protected Weinstein for decades."
Feeley has written widely on celebrity gossip and the Hollywood film industry and its key figures, including Mary Pickford, Irving Thalberg, Louella Parsons, and Hedda Hopper. Most recently, a forthcoming chapter, "'The Great and Important Thing in Her Life': Depicting Female Labor and Ambition in 1920s and 1930s U.S. Movie Magazines," in Mapping Movie Magazines, ed. Daniel Biltereyst and Liesbeth Van deVijver (forthcoming in 2018 from Palgrave/MacMillan), examines the professional and personal relationships amongst Joan Crawford and the female writers and editors of an emerging Hollywood press corps and the complex and contested discourse they produced in the pages of movie magazines around issues of work, harassment, ambition, and likeability in 1920s and 1930s America.

Harvey Weinstein: The Real Reasons People Don't Report Workplace Sexual Harassment
Mike Domitrz
Founder
The Date Safe Project
Domitrz is available to speak on the Harvey Weinstein cases, specifically the audiotape released where Weinstein does not respect the woman's answer as she continually says 'no.' Says Domitrz: "It should have only been one 'no' and that is it. A 'no' is never rude and should be accepted and honored the first time it is said."
Domitrz can also discuss the real reasons people don't report workplace sexual harassment; how workplace sexual harassment is not just a female or male problem; why Weinstein is a symptom of a larger, cultural problem; and how we can change and make creating a culture of consent and respect the new norm. He speaks globally on sexual assault to more than 100,000 people each year, including at universities and the U.S. military. He is also the author of "Can I Kiss You?"

Courts Should Protect Media from Trump Threats
Paul C. Watler
First Amendment Lawyer
Jackson Walker LLP in Dallas
President Donald Trump's threats against NBC for news coverage he didn't like are not unprecedented, says Watler: "There is a long history of American presidents criticizing the coverage they receive in the press, with an equally long history of American journalists doing their jobs despite presidential disfavor. A few presidents, most notoriously Richard Nixon, actually attempted to turn their dislike of the media into official retaliation by government agencies or regulators. But those vengeful efforts at official harassment were abject failures. The First Amendment guarantee of freedom of the press stands as a fundamental bar to the type of vindictive action that the current president seems to contemplate or encourage. As long as we have federal judges who are true to their oaths to uphold the Constitution, media organizations should be protected from efforts to intimidate or subvert independent news reporting."

When It Comes to College Savings Basics, Parents Struggle to Make the Grade
Kyla Michaud
Vice President
Fidelity Investments
"While saving for college is a top priority for a majority of families, many parents still stumble over a number of college savings fundamentals. Taking time early to map out a savings strategy that fits your family's unique college goals can help you stay on track, and feel prepared when the time comes for your child to head to campus."
Michaud can speak to Fidelity's College IQ Survey (to be released on Oct. 12), which reveals parents' college savings knowledge gaps and pinpoints areas where they may need a tutor.
