LOS ANGELES, May 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers are thinking "practical" when shopping for Father's Day this year, according to a survey from online shopping site PriceGrabber®. Results reveal that the majority of shoppers who plan to purchase Father's Day gifts are looking to spend less than $100 on dad this year (55%). While a portion of shoppers indicated they plan to spend between $100 and $249 on gifts (23%), few plan to splurge over $250 (12%), while the remaining do not have a budget in mind (10%). Conducted from April 19 to May 6, 2013, the survey includes responses from 4,921 U.S. online shopping consumers.

Practicality reins when shopping for dad
When shoppers were asked to select all the types of gifts they plan to purchase for Father's Day, practical gifts such as tools, auto accessories, or appliances prevailed (38%). Clothing and accessories such as wallets, shoes, ties, shirts, jackets and athletic apparel ranked as the second most popular gift choice (27%). Entertainment type gifts such as consumer electronics, music, video games or movies ranked third (21%) along with hobby related gifts such as sporting goods (21%). Outdoor items such as barbecue tools or outdoor furniture followed (15%), and only a few are opting for an experiential gift such as a dinner, vacation or show (12%).
According to the survey, nearly one-fifth of respondents (18%) are planning to shop for a tech-type gift such as a computer, tablet or smartphone for dad. When shoppers were asked to select all the tech-type gifts they plan to shop for, tablets were the top choice again this year (41%). Laptop computers ranked as the second most popular gift choice within this category (26%), followed by smartphones (24%), cameras (20%), TVs (13%), and e-readers (9%).
Men and women lean towards different gifts
Gender plays a role when choosing the perfect gift for Father's Day, with men and women leaning towards different gift selections. According to the survey data, more men (45%) indicated they would buy practical gifts for dad (vs. 33% women), while more women (31%) said they would purchase clothing and accessories (vs. 23% men). A higher amount of men (25%) also said that they plan to give a tech-type gift (vs. 12% women). Within the tech gift selections, more males (29%) favored laptops (vs. 21% women) while more females (13%) chose e-readers (vs. 6% men).
Most consumers plan to buy Father's Day gifts online, two weeks prior
When consumers were asked how they plan to purchase their Father's Day gifts this year, the majority indicated they would buy from online stores (59%). June will be a busy month for retailers, as most respondents indicated they will buy their presents one (24%) or two weeks (31%) in advance. A portion of shoppers are planning ahead and indicated they would buy their gift in May, one month in advance (18%), and three weeks prior (15%). Only a small amount of shoppers indicated they would wait until the last minute and buy gifts within 48 hours of the holiday (11%).
Free shipping sways shoppers to purchase
When consumers were asked to select all of the retailer tactics that will entice them to buy a product or a service for Father's Day, the majority said free shipping (60%). The second most attractive retailer tactic was price cuts (49%), followed by sales (46%), coupons (42%), and "a limited quantity of the product available" (4%). According to the survey data, some shoppers believe they will not be influenced by retailer tactics (15%).
