President Obama Recognizes Time Warner Cable's Commitment to Advancing STEM Education Opportunities for our Nation's Youth
"Change the Equation" initiative launched to increase student interest In science, technology, engineering and math
NEW YORK, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, at a White House Press Conference, President Obama launched Change the Equation (CTEq), a new, CEO-led initiative of more than 100 companies from across industry sectors, including Time Warner Cable (TWC), dedicated to promoting innovation and investment in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). CTEq is part of the President's Educate to Innovate campaign aimed at improving the participation and performance of America's students in STEM subjects.
"Our success as a nation depends on strengthening America's role as the world's engine of discovery and innovation," said President Obama. "I applaud Change the Equation for lending their resources, expertise, and their enthusiasm to the task of strengthening America's leadership in the 21st century by improving education in science, technology, engineering and math."
Sharing the stage with President Obama at today's press conference were Glenn Britt, CEO of TWC and founding member of CTEq, as well as Mary Pinnell, a 10-year-old fifth grader from Hill Elementary School in Lincoln, NE. Mary was invited as a guest of Mr. Britt and TWC because of her love for robotics, a new passion discovered through her involvement with TWC's local STEM efforts in her home town. It is students like Mary who are the embodiment of the curiosity in our nation's youth that the President and TWC are striving to connect with through their respective STEM programs. "The future success of our country will depend on the education we give our children, and I'm pleased that Time Warner Cable shares President Obama's commitment to increasing the opportunities available to our students," stated Britt. "With the global job market placing a greater demand on STEM, the US can no longer afford to lag behind our foreign competitors in these vital areas of study and education."
In November 2009, TWC launched Connect a Million Minds (CAMM), a five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to connect youth to ideas, people and opportunities that will inspire them to pursue education and careers in STEM.
