Poshmark Launches on Android to Target Millions of Women's Closets Across America
Mobile fashion marketplace brings its seamless buying and selling experience to largest group of female smartphone users
MENLO PARK, Calif., Nov. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Poshmark, the fastest growing mobile marketplace for buying and selling women's fashion, is releasing its highly anticipated Android app, finally making the unique social shopping community available to the millions of American women who own Android smartphones. The move to the Android platform is a big one for the almost two-year-old fashion marketplace, which has created a seamless end-to-end mobile commerce experience that is being adopted by millions of women across the country.

Coming to the Android platform has been the biggest request from the community and Poshmark's Android app brings together all the features from its popular iOS app. The experience to get started is just as easy; new Android users can get their closets up for sale in less than 60 seconds, uploading clothing and accessories they want to sell by simply taking a photo of the item with their mobile device's camera. The free app can be downloaded in Google Play at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.poshmark.app
For new Android users, here's how the Poshmark app works:
- Download the app for free on Google Play Marketplace or in the Apple App Store.
- Sellers can upload listings by taking Covershot photos of their clothes and accessories, building out their "closets" on the Poshmark app. When they make a sale, Poshmark sends them a prepaid label for easy shipping. Once the buyer receives the item and approves it, Poshmark releases the buyer's payment to the seller.
- Buyers can browse and shop millions of items from closets all over the country, any time they want, on their smartphones.
- Daily in-app shopping parties called "Posh Parties" happen three times a day giving women the opportunity to gather and browse or market specific items from their closets within different themes such as Fall Trends and Bold Accessories, or around specific designers such as Marc Jacobs, Rebecca Minkoff or Chanel.
- 70 percent of Poshmark buyers are also sellers – so a 'Posher' can create a revolving closet through the app without spending any new money, using only the money made from Poshmark sales to purchase new items.
Poshmark's social shopping movement has already empowered a diverse group of women across America to easily buy and sell out of their own closets, many becoming "Closet Entrepreneurs" who have started their own businesses at virtually no cost from their mobile phones. Poshmark's unique blend of a social network and shopping destination combined with the capacity to make money has resulted in a vibrant and fanatic community that has become a national phenomenon, driving women to engage with the app 7-8 times a day for 20-25 minutes. With today's introduction of Android, Poshmark's reach will expand to help millions more women become closet entrepreneurs and take part in this exciting fashion community.
"I've been a huge fan of Poshmark from the very beginning and have been waiting for it to come to Android," said Poshmark user Sharon Pangilinan. "Poshmark and Android are a match made in mobile shopping heaven - the bigger screen and enhanced picture quality will help buyers and sellers alike."
With 56 percent of the smartphone market belonging to women, Poshmark's success based on the early bet on going mobile-first will only continue to fuel the company's growth as it opens the platform to more users. Poshmark CEO and founder Manish Chandra's laser sharp focus on perfecting iOS and building a solid, engaged community over the past two years has paid off with women selling over 1M items this year -- a projected 10x increase in items sold from 2012.
"Mobile technologies today remove a lot of the friction that we saw just a couple years ago with e-commerce. This new found mobile freedom is exciting because it means that we're walking around with our purchasing power in our pockets," said Chandra. "This shift in behavior is what has enabled Poshmark to become the go-to fashion destination for quick and easy merchandising, browsing and transacting - and by launching on Android today, we've greatly expanded our reach so that millions more women can join the community and take part in the evolution of commerce."
Poshmark's traction has also spiked interest within the venture capital community with over $15.5M in funds raised so far. Poshmark recently unveiled some previously unannounced celebrity investors from the fashion industry, Hollywood, and Silicon Valley, including Rachel Zoe, Ashton Kutcher, Naval Ravikant and Shervin Pishevar, who publicly joined the ranks of Poshmarks' marquee investors Menlo Ventures, Mayfield Fund, Inventus Capital, and SoftTech VC.
