DENVER, July 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Pop Culture Classroom, the educational non-profit behind Denver Comic Con, announced that it is launching a new graphic novel awards program for the publishing industry.
The Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards will celebrate the best in fiction and non-fiction graphic novels, honoring the creators, publishers and educators using graphic literature to ignite a love of learning in classrooms worldwide.
The first awards ceremony will take place at Denver Comic Con next year, scheduled for June 15-17. The exact date and time of the ceremony will be announced closer to the convention. The program advisory board, jury members and detailed information on the graphic novel submission process will be announced in the coming months.
"More than four years ago, we set out to establish a new class of awards that recognizes the best in graphic novel publishing, but that also supports and encourages the increasing use of graphic novels in the educational market," said Illya Kowalchuk, director of education for Pop Culture Classroom.
"To do that, one of our biggest goals is to create a program that ultimately benefits educators, librarians and retailers, by shining a spotlight on the use of graphic literature to inspire students at every reading level," added Kowalchuk. "We are honored to have some of the greatest minds in the public library and school library systems contributing as advisors and judges, along with academic educators, K-12 specialists, and industry luminaries."
Award categories for the inaugural year are planned to include the following:
- Book of the Year
- Best in Educational Comics: Early Childhood
- Best in Educational Comics: Primary
- Best in Educational Comics: Secondary
- Best New Voice
- Innovator Award
- Diversity Award
Juries will select five finalists for each category and all finalists will be announced in advance of the awards ceremony. Juries will select a winner in each category by secret ballot vote, and all winners will be announced live, on stage at the awards ceremony at Denver Comic Con.
