Pennsylvania's Scholarship Tax Credit Program Boasts Highest Enrollment Nationally, New School Choice Yearbook Reveals
WASHINGTON, Jan. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 40,000 students in Pennsylvania are benefiting from the state's decade-old corporate scholarship tax credit program, according to the School Choice Yearbook 2011-2012—the annual award-winning publication offering the most comprehensive data on the nation's 27 private school choice programs—released yesterday by the Alliance for School Choice.
Pennsylvania's Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program enrolled 40,876 students last year—more than any single publicly funded school choice program nationwide—in a record-setting year for school choice across the country. More than 210,000 students nationally now participate in publicly funded private school choice programs.

In step with what The Wall Street Journal has dubbed as "The Year of School Choice," the Yearbook chronicles not only the effects of school reform in Pennsylvania, but also highlights the active role taken by citizens across the state who stood up in support of educational options, and how large-scale expansions nationwide made 2011 such a breakthrough year. Last year, the Pennsylvania state Senate passed a bipartisan bill to expand options for children in low-income families who remain trapped in failing schools.
"The continued growth of Pennsylvania's scholarship tax credit program and legislative efforts to further expand these options are critically important to improving educational outcomes for children in Pennsylvania," said Yearbook coauthor Malcom Glenn, the national director of communications at the Alliance. "It's heartening to see the difference that having a choice has made in the lives of families across the state."
The Alliance's annual Yearbook, entitled School Choice Now: The Year of School Choice, contains an analysis of trends and information regarding school choice, a directory of the accountability provisions and requirements for each of the 27 private school choice programs, and a chronicle of the events from the past year.
"Pennsylvania citizens have seen the impact of school choice expansion elsewhere," said Alliance Chairman Betsy DeVos, "and we applaud the strong effort in Pennsylvania to expand educational options so more children may benefit in 2012."
