Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare Hosts Pennsylvania Autism Training Conference

LANCASTER, Pa., June 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Department of Public Welfare's Bureau of Autism Services today kicked off its seventh annual Pennsylvania Autism Training Conference in Lancaster, convening 350 professionals across the state for training and to share best practices.

"Under Governor Corbett's leadership, Pennsylvania continues to lead the nation in addressing the needs of the autism community and the professionals who serve them," Department of Public Welfare (DPW) Secretary Beverly Mackereth said. "We are so excited to expand this year's conference to include sessions for adults on the spectrum."

This year's conference, "Delivering Autism Services in Pennsylvania: Practical Strategies & Tools," will highlight the abilities of adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Individuals with ASD are presenting keynote and breakout sessions. Art, created by a collection of artists with ASD, will also be on display and for sale. 

DPW recognizes the need for qualified, trained professionals to evaluate, treat, educate and provide services to individuals with autism across the spectrum and throughout their lives. The department has made training a priority across all initiatives.

"We understand the challenges families face in accessing care, support and education – all of which often cause significant hardships," Mackereth said. "This conference will help address the daily trials faced by autism caregivers."

The conference will focus on wide-ranging issues affecting individuals with autism and their families, addressing real-life situations faced by autism caregivers. Presenters will offer expertise and best practices based on proven strategies from across the commonwealth.

Conference topics will include: Crisis Support, Medication, Self-Determination & Advocacy, Employment, Clinical Models, Adult Social Skills, Anxiety, and Behavioral Strategies. 

Breakout sessions are being presented by leadership from the Autism Services, Education, Resources & Training Collaborative (ASERT), an innovative statewide initiative funded by DPW.

The three-day conference meets requirements for Act 62 Behavior Specialist licensing and for continuing education for professionals.
