PAXCON® Protective Coatings by LINE-X® Earns Recommendation to Retrofit Government Buildings for Safety
- PAXCON Holds Strong Against Competitors in Blast Mitigation Testing -
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., June 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- LINE-X Protective Coatings, the nation's leading developer and provider of high performance protective coatings has earned a safety initiative recommendation for its PAXCON products by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to retrofit government buildings. As part of the recommendation process, the USACE recently completed a series of blast mitigation tests at the Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants facility near San Antonio, Texas, and the results proved that the PAXCON Protective Coatings easily outperformed the competition.
Utilizing a retrofitted masonry wall to simulate the wall of a structure, LINE-X professional applicators sprayed three sample walls with PAXCON PX-3350 material. Each of the three walls was then placed through a series of both static and dynamic tests – challenging the resistance and deflection abilities of the walls. The objective was to determine how walls sprayed with various protective coatings would respond to a given blast load. The data gathered from the tests will be used to develop a computerized model for designing retrofits of existing government structures around the globe to meet greater blast mitigation standards.
"Our results showed that polymeric coatings such as PAXCON significantly improve the level of protection that the walls can achieve and contain the fragments," said Mike Bequette of the USACE Protective Design Center. "Within the parameters of the testing, the walls sprayed with PAXCON maintained a high degree of integrity. Maintaining the integrity of the walls and reducing fragmentation of the masonry is critical in reducing the risk of fatalities for occupants of the structure."
"We are pleased that yet again PAXCON has proven that it provides a strong defense in protecting lives," said LINE-X CEO Kevin Heronimus. "For more than 12 years now, PAXCON has been a proven blast mitigation factor. Knowing that our product is used to provide added protection to the U.S. Pentagon is certainly a significant source of pride for our company. With these latest test results, we anticipate that PAXCON material will be helping protect even more lives throughout the world."
Bequette said data from the test results will be used to develop an analysis tool for polymer retrofitted, unreinforced masonry walls in general. This model will be included in the next release of the PDC's Single-Degree of Freedom Blast Effects Design Spreadsheet (SBEDS v5.0), which will be made available for designing retrofits for government buildings in future renovations. Designers will be able to manually input product-specific polymer properties into SBEDS or simply select the PAXCON product from a drop-down list.
"One of the biggest hurdles we have had was locating an effective way to disseminate PAXCON application information to the architects and engineers who design the structures that could most benefit from PAXCON's protection," said Steve Decker, Vice President of PAXCON and International Operations. "The latest accolades could certainly create new opportunities for PAXCON. The information that is readily available in the SBEDS program has the potential to have a tremendously positive impact on facility security here at home and abroad."
LINE-X continues to lead the marketplace with innovative products that provide unique solutions. With this recent recommendation for the use of PAXCON in government buildings, military bases and vehicles and international government facilities worldwide, LINE-X has again distanced itself from competitive offerings.
