Parker Waichman LLP: Within a Week, Five More 9/11 Heroes Die from 9/11-related Illnesses
Illnesses related to 9/11, including dozens of different cancers, continue to claim the lives of 9/11 responders. A memorial honoring 9/11 first responders who have died lists 800 names.
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y., March 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Parker Waichman LLP, a national law firm that has spent many years fighting to ensure that the heroes and survivors of the September 11th terrorist attacks are never forgotten, sends its condolences to the friends and family members of the first responders who recently passed away due to 9/11-related illnesses. On February 17, 2017 NBC New York published an article stating that five responders died during the one-week period prior due to health conditions from 9/11. Three of the responders were from the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) and two of the responders were from the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Rescue workers, first responders, residents, and other 9/11 survivors were exposed to numerous hazardous chemicals at the World Trade Center (WTC) site. Exposure to the toxic dust cloud has been linked to many different conditions, including dozens of different cancers, airway and digestive conditions, and mental health problems. In the 16 years that have passed since the September 11th terrorist attacks, an increasing number of responders and survivors are becoming ill.
NBC reports that Robert Newman, who spent nearly four decades as a firefighter, was one of the five FDNY and NYPD workers who died of a 9/11-related cancer. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Rose Scott also passed from a WTC-related condition. Cancer has claimed the lives of many 9/11 responders and rescue workers. The responders answered the call for help when the towers were struck, and assisted with the recovery efforts.
"I have been to 159 wakes and funerals," said John Feal, founder of the 9/11 responder advocacy group FealGood Foundation, according to NBC. Feal says 55 responders have died due to 9/11-related illnesses since September 2016, alone. In Long Island, a memorial honoring 9/11 responders who died contains about 800 names and was last updated in September 2016.
Parker Waichman continues to remember and honor 9/11 responders and survivors. "With the tragic passing of more 9/11 heroes, we must continue to remember the sacrifices that they made," said Keith Gitman, Managing Attorney at Parker Waichman. "9/11 happened 16 years ago, but responders, survivors, and their families continue to live with its effects to this day."
Parker Waichman emphasizes the importance of the Victims Compensation Fund (VCF) and the WTC Health Program and is proud to have fought alongside Ground Zero residents, workers, first responders, and other survivors and advocates, to help ensure passage of Zadroga Act amendments. The firm vows to continue its efforts to safeguard all who were exposed to Ground Zero's toxic cloud and the trauma of the attacks, and ensure that all deserved Zadroga Act compensation is received.
