Panda Security Processes 200 Millionth Malware File via the Cloud
Collective Intelligence, Panda's pioneering cloud-based security system, reaches milestone figure
ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- PandaLabs, Panda Security's anti-malware laboratory, today announced that Collective Intelligence, the engine powering its internet security solutions for consumers and business users, has reached a historic milestone by processing 200 million files. Launched in 2007 in response to exponentially rising rates of malware, Collective Intelligence automatically detects, scans, classifies and disinfects the thousands of new samples received every day at PandaLabs. Collective Intelligence was the first cloud-based system for processing modern levels of malware while minimizing the impact on PC performance.
Between January and September of this year alone, Collective Intelligence processed 19.9 million new malware specimens (including new threats and variants of existing families), the same amount as in the first ten months of 2010. Panda Security's database currently stores 81.9 million malware samples, 24.2 percent of which were created in the first nine months of 2011. These figures show cyber-criminals' sheer capacity to automate the creation of new malware variants, further evidenced by the average number of new threats created and released every day increasing from 63,000 to 73,000 since last year.
Panda Security pioneered cloud-based security technology with Collective Intelligence and was the first to provide both home and business users with the key benefits of this approach, including elimination of hardware costs; less impact on local server and desktop resource consumption; and greater overall protection against the newest and most dangerous threats.
Following is a brief timeline of Panda's history of innovation with cloud computing over the years:
- Panda ActiveScan launches as world's first cloud-based malware scanner in 2007.
- Home users benefit from Panda's complete cloud-based scanning and detection capabilities in 2008 consumer security suites.
- Panda launches first free, cloud-based antivirus service for consumers in April 2009 with Panda Cloud Antivirus.
- Business users reap benefits of cloud-based security with launch of Panda Cloud Protection in November 2009.
- Panda Cloud Antivirus emerges as fastest growing free antivirus in 2010 with more than 10 million downloads in first year on the market.
- Collective Intelligence outperforms other major antivirus engines on detection in 2011 in independent tests conducted by AV-Comparatives.org and AV-Test.org.
Since its launch, millions of users around the world have experienced the benefits of Collective Intelligence, an approach that other major antivirus software providers have attempted to follow. About PandaLabs
Since 1990, PandaLabs, Panda Security's malware research laboratory, has been working to detect and classify malware in order to protect consumers and companies against new Internet threats. To do so, PandaLabs uses Collective Intelligence, a cloud-based proprietary system that leverages the knowledge gathered from Panda's user community to automatically detect, analyze and classify the more than 73,000 new malware strains that appear every day. This automated malware classification is complemented through the work of an international team with researchers specialized each in a specific type of malware (viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware and other attacks) to provide global coverage.
