PA Human Relations Commission Orders Drexel Hill Landlord to Pay $13,300 for Retaliating Against Tenant for Complaint of Sexual Harassment
HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission ordered Drexelbrook Associates and L. William Kay II, of Drexel Hill, Delaware County, to pay $13,300 for illegally retaliating against Ingrid Dotson Luderman for filing a sexual harassment suit in federal court against a company owned by Drexelbrook.
Dotson Luderman lives in Wayne, Delaware County. The order took effect July 25.
Drexelbrook Associates, in which Kay is a general partner, terminated Dotson Luderman's lease after she had lived in company-owned apartments for 11 years. Shortly before terminating her lease, the company settled her federal sexual harassment suit against her employer, which is also owned by Drexelbrook.
"It is crucial that people know their rights are protected if they speak or act against illegal discrimination," said Gerry Robinson, commission chairman. "Landlords need to know they cannot legally punish a tenant for making an allegation."
Drexelbrook and Kay were ordered to cease retaliating against anyone who files a discrimination claim against them. They were also ordered to pay $10,648 to Dotson Luderman for expenses related to her forced relocation, plus interest until full payment is made.
To date, the interest brings the award to over $13,300.
Drexelbrook and Kay have 30 days to report to the commission on how they will comply with the order.
