Orchid SRV Featured Among Latest Innovations in Emergency Medicine
Technology designed to prevent accidental IV dislodgement, improve patient safety across care settings
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oct. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Linear Health Sciences was chosen to exhibit its patented vascular access technology in a special area of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) scientific assembly, the world's largest emergency medicine conference. The Orchid Safety Release Valve™ (SRV) is a patient safety device designed to help prevent intravenous (IV) catheter dislodgement.

As one of the top three companies selected, Linear Health also participated in the AngelMD-sponsored innovatED Pitch Event, in which they presented their ideas to a panel of healthcare and technology professionals.

Insertion of an intravenous catheter is one of the most commonly performed procedures in emergency departments (EDs). Accidental IV catheter dislodgement is experienced daily in hospitals across the United States. Up to 90 percent of hospital patients receive an IV, and clinical studies show that on average 15 percent of those will become dislodged. IV dislodgement can cause interruptions in necessary treatments and lead to greater stress and anxiety for patients. In addition, restarting a dislodged catheter can cost upwards of $30 each for staffing and equipment.
In a 2017 survey of nurses and vascular access specialists, nearly all respondents reported that their institutions considered IV dislodgement a safety risk.
The Orchid SRV uses a patented breakaway technology to help protect against accidental dislodgement. When a sudden force is applied, the SRV breaks away and seals off both sides of the IV, thus protecting the insertion site and preventing the loss of valuable medication. The IV can be re-engaged by simply replacing the valve.
In addition to its inclusion in ACEP's innovatED, the Orchid SRV was highlighted in a poster presentation at the 2018 scientific meeting of the Association for Vascular Access in September.
Nancy Moureau, PhD, RN, CRNI, CPUI, VA-BC, author of the 2017 IV dislodgement survey, presented the results of a qualitative study designed to validate and refine educational tools regarding the Orchid SRV. Dr. Moureau is an internationally recognized expert and consultant in vascular access and CEO of PICC Excellence.
"This study was initiated to develop educational tools for use with the safety release valve," said Dr. Moureau. "Our goal was to receive feedback from clinician users to validate the tools and make improvements to ensure effective clinical communication when educating vascular access specialists about the SRV technology."
The tools, which include an infographic and quick reference guide, were tested with a group of vascular access nurses attending a continuing education meeting regarding accidental dislodgement of IV catheters. The tools were modified in response to user feedback, and the final results suggest they will be valuable in educating clinicians about the product.
