SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 5, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Nurx, the consumer healthcare company providing unlimited online consultations with medical providers and seamless delivery of medications and home testing, is now available in Oregon. The telemedicine company offers birth control, home HPV testing, and the HIV prevention medication PrEP, expanding access to high quality, patient-first preventive care.
Nurx is focused on providing convenient and affordable preventive care, leveraging telemedicine to reach those who traditionally lack access to healthcare. After consulting with a state-licensed medical provider, Nurx patients can choose from over 50 birth control brands, many of which are affordable and cost-effective for those with and without insurance. Nearly half of all pregnancies in Oregon are unintended (46 percent), and public spending for unintended pregnancies in the state topped an estimated $170 million in 2010.* Nearly 270,000 women in Oregon are in need of publicly funded family planning services.
"We were encouraged by Oregon legislation making it easier for women to request birth control from a pharmacist, although general awareness and the cost of birth control remains a significant barrier for many women," said Nurx CEO and co-founder Hans Gangeskar. "We're taking these efforts a step further by making it incredibly convenient to request and receive birth control, while also ensuring women have a wide variety of affordable options, especially for those without health insurance."
Committed to giving users full control of their sexual health, Nurx also offers PrEP, a daily pill that is up to 99 percent effective at ensuring HIV-negative people stay HIV-negative. Nurx is the only company that allows patients to go through the whole process of requesting and receiving PrEP without needing to visit a physical health center - including consulting with a medical provider to determine if PrEP is right for them, complete the necessary lab work with the company's PrEP home test kit, receive and fill the prescription, and have PrEP delivered straight to their door.
Nurx also recently removed a critical barrier to cervical cancer screening by offering a Home HPV Screening test, which allows women to conveniently and affordably check their risk for cervical cancer from the comfort of their own home. Nurx's Home HPV Screening test checks for high-risk strains of HPV that can lead to cervical cancer, which nearly 13,000 women are diagnosed with each year and is one of the most preventable types of cancer.
Nurx offers a seamless experience by integrating an owned-and-operated pharmacy, a network of partner physicians, and a telehealth app. Nurx is now available in 22 states and the District of Columbia, encompassing more than 70% of the US population. The list includes Alabama, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, and now Oregon. The company operates according to state and federal standards, including HIPAA.
