Starting December 31, 2010, under the EPA's new ENERGY STAR Enhanced Testing and Verification procedures, all products seeking qualification as an ENERGY STAR product must have their products tested in an EPA-recognized laboratory and the results certified by an EPA-recognized certification body such as NSF International to ensure compliance.
A joint program administered by the U.S. EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR saves consumers money and protects the environment by encouraging the use of energy efficient products and practices. NSF International is a not-for-profit public health and safety organization that has developed foodservice equipment sanitation standards and certification programs for more than 65 years.
As an EPA-recognized laboratory and certification body, NSF can now offer combined ENERGY STAR energy efficiency and NSF sanitation certification for foodservice equipment manufacturers. NSF International tests and certifies a wide range of commercial foodservice equipment, and can now add ENERGY STAR testing in the following product categories: Appliances (Dishwashers, Refrigerators and/or Freezers, Water Coolers); Refrigerated Beverage Vending Machines (including rebuilt); and Commercial Food Service Equipment (Dishwashers, Fryers, Griddles, Hot Food Holding Cabinets, Ice Machines, Ovens, Refrigerators, Freezers and Steam Cookers). Additionally, as an EPA-recognized certification body, NSF can accept test data from other EPA-recognized labs to certify other products as ENERGY STAR qualified.
Appliances meeting all ENERGY STAR energy efficiency requirements and NSF sanitation certification requirements can bear both the ENERGY STAR and NSF logos. ENERGY STAR-qualified products will be listed on the ENERGY STAR site and all NSF certified products will appear on NSF's Online Listings.
"With EPA recognition to validate ENERGY STAR products, NSF can now provide foodservice equipment manufacturers a 'one-stop shop' for energy efficiency testing, sanitation testing and certification, which will save manufacturers both time and money," said Nancy Culotta, NSF International Vice President. "Consumers can be assured an ENERGY STAR product that has been tested and certified by an independent third-party organization such as NSF International has met all ENERGY STAR energy performance requirements."
To achieve EPA recognition, NSF International was required to demonstrate compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 (testing, calibrations and sampling) and ISO/IEC Guide 65 for product certification, and to submit a detailed proposal outlining the certification program, policies and procedures.

About NSF International: NSF International, an independent, not-for-profit organization, certifies products and writes standards for food, water and consumer goods to minimize adverse health effects and protect the environmental (www.nsf.org). Founded in 1944, NSF is committed to protecting human health and safety worldwide and operates in more than 120 countries. NSF is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Food and Water Safety and Indoor Environment.
NSF is a leader in developing the American National Standards for foodservice equipment. NSF's Food Equipment Certification Program, based on those standards, is a voluntary conformity assessment program that includes testing, certification and production facility audits to verify compliance. This evaluation includes examining the materials coming into contact with food and reviewing the construction design against the standard requirements to ensure cleanability and prevent the harborage of bacteria.
The NSF Certification Mark on a food equipment product confirms that NSF has assessed and certified its conformity to the standard. The production facility is audited annually as part of the certification process. When applicable, performance testing is conducted to ensure the equipment operates as required and maintains proper temperature.
Additional NSF services are NSF Sustainability Solutions, which includes sustainable standards development and product certification, environmental claims verification, greenhouse gas verification, footprinting and environmental management systems registration; NSF Training and Education; safety audits for the food and water industries; and management systems registrations (ISO) delivered through NSF International Strategic Registrations (NSF-ISR).
