Northeasterners Are Tougher Than Other Regions, According to Winter Depression Symptom Research from InCrowd
As Snows Threaten Again, Nationwide Mobile Microsurvey shows the Northeast Weathers the Weather Better Than Anywhere Else in the US
BOSTON, March 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A nationwide survey performed this week showed that despite an epic winter across most of the country, Northeasterners are hardier than their peers when it comes to riding out depression symptoms associated with snow and cold temperatures, according to InCrowd, the leader in real time market research. As a wintry mix forecast for the upcoming weekend threatens to break some snowfall records, the results indicate the Northeast is more than equipped to handle it.
InCrowd surveyed 300 adults from around the country using the Center for Epidemiological Studies depression scale (CES-D) and data showed the winter blues are for real. Across all respondents, low temperatures and high levels of snowfall correlated to poor moods, difficulty getting around, and social isolation, as might be expected. Approximately 27% of respondents had diagnosed depression and/or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Young people age 21 to 30 reported both greater difficulty with commuting and difficulty getting up in the morning in winter weather conditions. Women also were more likely to have difficulty getting up and in dealing with feelings of isolation brought on by weather conditions than men.
Yet despite having twice the snowfall and the coldest average temperatures in the nation, respondents from the Northeast were less depressed than respondents from the Midwest and South. The South had the lowest snowfall, and yet the highest depression score. The Midwest had the second highest depression score, while the West was easily the least depressed.
Numerous remarks along the lines of "record breaking snows weren't so bad" and "so what - when you live in New England, it snows in the winter" suggest the season's last hurrah of a storm after a few days of warmer temperatures will likely do little to dampen the resilience of the region.
