North America Digital English Market Reached $318 Million in 2013
North America is a Lucrative Revenue Opportunity for Digital English Language Learning Suppliers According to a New Ambient Insight Report
SEATTLE, March 18, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in North America is 5.3% and revenues will reach $410.9 million by 2018, according to a new Ambient Insight report called, "The 2013-2018 North America Digital English Language Learning Market."
This report provides forecasts for Canada and the United States (US). There are thriving English as a Second Language (ESL) markets in both countries and a growing demand for digital products. The buying behavior is different in each country. Government agencies and academic institutions are the top buyers in Canada, but consumers dominate the US market. The US was the second-largest buying country for digital English products in 2013, second only to China, which took the lead by a slight margin in 2013.
"We have identified five major catalysts driving sales in North America," reports Sam S. Adkins, Chief Research Officer. "Strong consumer demand for language learning apps, government spending on ESL programs, academic digitization initiatives, spending on academic English, and the corporate demand for specialized forms of vocational English are the primary factors contributing to the healthy market."

There are two sections in this report: a demand-side analysis and a supply-side analysis. Additionally, the report includes an index of over 65 suppliers competing in North America that are cited in the report.
"The demand-side analysis provides suppliers with five-year revenue forecasts for Canada and the US for five buying segments," comments CEO Tyson Greer. "Forecasts for digital English language learning products are broken out in each country for PreK-12, higher education, consumer, corporate, and government buyers"
The supply-side section provides revenue forecasts for four types of digital English learning products and services including: Self-paced eLearning (courseware), Collaboration-based Learning (live online tutoring), Digital Reference-ware (eTextbooks), and Mobile Learning apps and edugames.
"Mobile forms of English language learning are quickly gaining traction in both countries," adds Adkins. "Of the four products forecasted in the supply-side section of this report, mobile English language learning and edugames have the highest growth rate throughout the forecast period."
ESL activity in North America is concentrated in three areas: ESL for very young children not yet in school, ESL in the academic segments, and adult ESL offered in a variety of venues including schools, colleges, universities, libraries, and private language schools.
"It is the adult ESL market in North America where things get complicated," says Greer. "This report identifies the complexity of the adult ESL market in Canada and the US including the demand for vocational English products like aviation, business, and hospitality English. One of the most specialized forms of English is academic English taught in higher education. Academic English includes cognitive and linguistic components not found in conversational English."
