Nomad Editions Launches Social Media Magazine u+me; Becomes Fifth Magazine in Diverse Roster of Digital Publications
First-of-its-kind new media company for iPhone, iPad and other mobile devices announces a digital magazine focusing on the impact and stories behind social media
NEW YORK, Feb. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Nomad Editions, a new media company producing first-of-their-kind digital publications designed for mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPad and other platforms, is pleased to announce u+me, the newest addition to its roster of weekly digital magazines. u+me focuses on the stories behind social media—how we shape them and how they shape us. Covering a landscape that is ever changing, u+me seeks to capture the ephemera of an increasingly digitally connected society.
Launched on February 11, u+me joins four current Nomad Editions publications, including Real Eats, Wide Screen, Wave Lines and BodySmart.
In the inaugural issue, Anthony De Rosa—co-founder of Neighborhoodr.com and declared by the New York Times as the "undisputed King of Tumblr"— explores the relevance of social media during revolution in his piece "Tweet like an Egyptian." Also in the issue, u+me Editor Chris Kaye reports on a Muppet-themed marriage proposal video that travelled rapidly through the blogosphere.
As a multi-media digital magazine, u+me delivers content about diverse platforms, including video-sharing websites such as YouTube, Vimeo and others.
"u+me captures the essence of the social networking phenomenon; its vibrancy, its universality...and its secrets," says Mark Edmiston, CEO of Nomad Editions. u+me will feature popular websites, memes and Internet communities.
"I'm excited about the launch of u+me because it's a new direction for Nomad Editions," says John Benditt, Editor-in-Chief of Nomad Editions. "It's sharp, it's edgy and it's about our fraught relations with social media. It shows how flexible the Nomad editorial model is, with its ability to create fluid digital weeklies about the most relevant issues of our time. In the months to come, we'll show our audience many new directions."
Additional u+me stories include:
- In "OMG," best-selling author Kris Ex, who has contributed to the Los Angeles Times, the Village Voice, and Rolling Stone, writes about the video phenomenon "Gang Fights," and readers can experience the action by linking directly to a live video.
- In "Match Game," Devon Glenn, who covers NY-based media and start-ups, writes about Moonit—a site that lauds itself as an "online destination for relationship compatibility."
- In "@BrianLynch," Writer Josh Dobbin conducts a "Twitter Interview" with screenwriter Brian Lynch, limiting question and answer to 140-characters each, which mimics the style of the popular micro-blogging and social networking site.
To read "OMG," "Match Game," "@BrianLynch," and other u+me stories, readers can sign up for a free trial at Nomad Editions or Facebook, where they can also enter an iPad Giveaway.
u+me is edited by Chris Kaye, who has more than a decade of experience in the digital media space. Los Angeles-based Kaye also serves as the Editorial Director of The Rundown, a daily email with editions in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. Joining Kaye in the production of u+me are NYC-based Creative Directors Trevett McCandliss and Nancy Campbell.
"With u+me, we want to create a document of social media that's more coherent than how it's usually covered," said Chris Kaye, Editor of u+me. "Social media is vast and fast, so we're creating a snapshot of what interests us in any given week. Anything from dissecting a meme to spotlighting a particularly funny Facebook page or insightful Twitter account—it's all fair game. McCandliss and Campbell bring a tremendous visual wit to the digital magazine, helping a new technology simultaneously feel both familiar and futuristic."
