Nextag Predicts New Online Shopping Features Will Increase E-Commerce Revenue This Holiday Season
SAN MATEO, Calif., Dec. 1, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Nextag, (Nextag.com), a leading comparison shopping website for products and services, cites the increase of online coupons, consumer recommendations and mobile applications as growth drivers which will help increase online sales this holiday season. comScore, a digital marketplace research firm, expects online sales for the 2010 holiday season will reach $32.4 billion, marking an 11% increase over the previous year for the combined November-December gift-buying period.
"When online shopping became mainstream years ago it didn't really offer many benefits other than the ability to shop at your convenience," said Jeffrey G. Katz, Chief Executive Officer of Nextag. "At Nextag, we have improved the consumer experience with the addition of reviews, mobile applications, coupons and other features. Now, you can quickly find what you're looking for and enjoy holiday shopping -and in many ways online shopping has evolved into a better experience than in-store. This improvement in the customer experience is definitely having a positive impact on sales."
Nextag has been on an aggressive path to improve the online shopping experience and has recently added new features such as a barcode scanning applications for smart phones, consumer reviews and recommendations, and online coupons. Consumers are responding favorably as Nextag reported sales increased 25% over the five-day period from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday vs. the same period in 2009.
According to a holiday survey from the National Retail Federation, online shoppers have traditionally been bargain hunters focused primarily on price and free shipping. While those factors are still important, today's online shopper has deeper pockets and greater technological sophistication than previously. Today's online shopper will spend 24.6 percent more than average adults ($858.49 for online shoppers vs. $688.87 for all adults), and this group is apt to make non-gift purchases for themselves (61.4% of online shoppers vs. 57.1% of adults). The steady growth of smartphones is also impacting the growth of online sales as more than 1/4 of Americans who have a smartphone say they will use their mobile device to shop for gifts, compare prices, and research products or read reviews on products. The trend toward shopping via smartphone is especially high among consumers 18-24 (45%).
