ALLEN, Texas, Nov. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Nexius, specializing in delivering end-to-end network services and business intelligence solutions to leading network operators and enterprise organizations, today announced research findings that identify Key Performance Indicators designed to optimize the performance and availability of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) environments.
The new research paper, "Organizational Collaboration and New KPIs for NFV Success," describes the importance of a development and operations (DevOps) structure and new Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that, combined, increase the success of NFV implementations. Researchers from Nexius and The University of Texas at Dallas found that to transition smoothly from legacy architectures to NFV, and realize the benefits without introducing disruption, requires new operational practices, measurement techniques, and KPIs.
"There are strong business motivators for operators to move from their current hardware-dependent architectures to NFV," said Mike Bonewitz, Vice President, Cloud and Fiber Strategies, Nexius. "But this shift brings uncertainty and risk to network stability and quality of service. Our research identifies a way forward to reduce the risks and realize the benefits."
In "Organizational Collaboration and New KPIs for NFV Success," Nexius and UT Dallas researchers point to the importance of development and operations teams working closely together. In an NFV environment, developers are continually delivering new services and functionality by implementing Virtual Network Functions (VNFs). Operations is challenged to accommodate these changes while preserving the stability of the network. By closely collaborating in a DevOps structure, these two previously disparate groups operate in a synchronized way.
At the same time, the dynamic nature of an NFV architecture demands KPIs more suited to that environment. Nexius and UT Dallas researchers developed the appropriate KPIs using the International Standards Organization (ISO) FCAPS (Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, Security) framework as their foundation.
"NFV requires a new framework for defining operational KPIs, which in many cases are quite different from those used in existing proprietary appliance based networks," said Dr. Ron Bose, Executive Director of the Institute for Data Analytics and Performance Management in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at UT Dallas. "Operators and enterprise organizations seeking to manage an NFV implementation will benefit from the research, which highlights the importance of DevOps, as well as defining a framework for NFV-specific KPIs."
The research paper, "Organizational Collaboration and New KPIs for NFV Success," may be used as a roadmap by those planning an NFV implementation. In addition to describing the value of DevOps, establishing a framework for defining new KPIs and providing some examples, the paper presents a "Virtual DVR" use case to illustrate the effectiveness of the new KPIs across a cable provider's business operations.
