News America Marketing Sends Marines To Super Bowl For The Sixth Year
Two Marine Wounded Warriors Will Head to Super Bowl XLVIII to Be Recognized for Their Service and to Enjoy the Historic Game in New York City
NEW YORK, Jan. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Staff Sergeant John Detamore and Corporal Chad Ohmer, of the U.S. Marines Corps, will attend Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday, February 2 and the weekend-long festivities leading up to the game as guests of News America Marketing, the premier single-source provider of consumer marketing services in the U.S. and Canada.
Detamore, originally from Kokomo, Ind., and Ohmer, of Cincinnati, Ohio, will be given transportation to and from the bases where they are currently stationed to this year's Super Bowl Headquarters in New York City. The historic game marks not only the first time the game has been held in the New York/New Jersey area, but also the first Super Bowl to be played outdoors in a cold weather environment. Upon arrival on Thursday night, they will be greeted by their News America Marketing hosts and treated to four nights at the exclusive Kimberly Hotel, located in Midtown Manhattan. Both service members will bring a guest for the weekend's events, including tickets to the Super Bowl game as well as invitations to the NFL's Super Bowl Tailgate Party, and News America Marketing's own weekend Kick Off Party aboard the USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. At the Intrepid event, they will be recognized for their service on stage by former NFL quarterback and current football analyst Boomer Esiason, the event's emcee, and thanked by their hosts for their service. Detamore will bring fellow serviceman, Andrew Gonzalez, currently serving in the U.S. Navy, and Ohmer will bring his brother, Dave Ohmer, from Knoxville, Tenn.
"We are so happy that these exceptional servicemen have accepted the invitation to join us in our home city of New York and enjoy the excitement of Super Bowl weekend," said Marty Garofalo, EVP of News America Marketing. "These men gave so much to their country, and that incredible bravery and commitment to protecting us is the most selfless gift a person can give. This is the sixth year in a row we've had the honor to recognize these American heroes, and we are very grateful to the Marine Corps for allowing us to give these Marines a small gift in return for all they have done for us."
Both Marines are wounded warriors who were injured in the line of duty. Detamore was struck with a bullet that settled into the top of his lung during the first of his six tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Due to the location of the bullet wound, the doctors elected not to remove it. Despite the injury, the 12-year Marine has continued on an additional five tours. Detamore's personal awards consist of a Purple Heart, two Combat Action ribbons, two Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medals, several Good Conduct Medals, Letters of Appreciation and Certificates of Appreciation, as well as a Certificate of Commendation.
Corporal Ohmer joined the Marines in 2009. Based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, he deployed to Afghanistan in 2011. On his second deployment he was injured in an IED explosion while trying to pull an injured fellow Marine to safety. He currently serves as a patient in care. His personal awards include a Purple Heart, a Combat Action Ribbon, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Nato ISAF Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal others.
Detamore and Ohmer were chosen out of more than 195,000 active duty enlisted Marines by the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Sgt. Maj. Micheal P. Barrett, the top enlisted Marine. These outstanding Marines were recommended by their commanding officers for their leadership, dedication to their units, and accomplishments above and beyond the call of duty.
