"Newk's Cares" Campaign Places Women's Health Front And Center In Honor Of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
JACKSON, Miss., Sept. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- With one in 70 women facing ovarian cancer, Newk's Eatery— a fast-casual restaurant brand known for its fresh, flavorful menu— is shining a spotlight on the relatively silent killer by turning up the volume on its growing "Newk's Cares" initiative. This month, Newk's ongoing ovarian cancer awareness campaign is re-surging across Newk's more than 80 restaurants with permanent in-restaurant changes and a second-annual Ovarian Cycle fundraising spin event.

In honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Newk's is going teal—the color of the global ovarian cancer awareness movement— switching out Newk's signature black cups for teal ones, as well as permanently replacing the brand's traditional red straws with teal straws. Newk's is also unveiling "Newk's Cares" water bottles— enduring replacements for Newk's 2-O water bottles. With 10 cents from every water bottle sold year-round to be donated to Ovarian Cancer Research Fund—the oldest and largest charity in the U.S. funding ovarian cancer research— diners have a chance to join the stand against ovarian cancer 365 days a year at any Newk's Eatery restaurant.
Inspired by Lori Newcomb— wife of Newk's Eatery's Co-Founder and CEO Chris Newcomb— whose personal battle with ovarian cancer began in 2013, Newk's Eatery has adopted ovarian cancer education and cure research as a core cause for the company through the Newk's Cares movement.
"With virtually no early detection test available for ovarian cancer, being in tune to your body's subtle warning signs is critical," said Lori Newcomb, Newk's Cares Co-Founder. "We can make survival a reality by understanding what ovarian cancer looks like in its early stages. This is why we started Newk's Cares— it was a kitchen table idea born from a desire to create life out of my cancer journey and make a positive contribution toward the health and happiness of fellow women."
Newk's Cares' September efforts will come to a head with the second annual Ovarian Cycle Jackson spin celebration on September 17 in Newk's home base of Jackson, Miss. where participants are invited to pedal their way to a cure. Having raised more than $120,000 for Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at last year's event, Newk's is increasing this year's fundraising goal to $150,000.
