CHICAGO, Nov. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The developers of NewCity, a new destination in the Lincoln Park area, invited students from the British International School of Chicago, Lincoln Park (BISC-LP), one of 42 schools in the Nord Anglia Education family, to perform during last weekend's Fall grand opening.
Kicking off the celebration, the school's choir sang for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a three-part medley which included the popular primary school song, "We are the Young," written by Mary Donnelly & George L.O. Strid. Shortly after the last song wrapped up, the mayor took the stage and commented on the collaboration between kids, parents, and staff.
"First of all, I want to say congratulations to the kids and their teachers. That was very beautiful," he said. "I also want to say congratulations to the moms and dads who were lip-synching along the way. There was obviously a lot of time spent at the kitchen table."
After Emanuel concluded his speech to over a hundred neighborhood residents about the new Lincoln Park attraction, the mayor surprised many of the kids by shaking hands with them and taking a group picture with the choir. Principal Mel Curtis, who greeted and stood by Emanuel during the photo session, commented on the success of her school's Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme and how it inspires her students to express themselves artistically and creatively through music instruction.
"Although the program is still new, our campus is already seeing the benefits of this wonderful opportunity to collaborate with The Juilliard School," she said. "Before today's moving performance, I know how hard our students have worked to incorporate the performing arts experience and expand on their creative, collaborative, and problem-solving skills in and out of the classroom."
British International School of Chicago, Lincoln Park, along with its sister campus in the South Loop, is the only school in Illinois offering this curriculum. Students take advantage of this program to gain the skills, curiosity and cultural literacy to engage with performing arts throughout their lives.
