New Report Examines Anti-Parent History of Sex Ed
Preserve Innocence Calls for New Approach
WASHINGTON, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "For nearly a century, this country has been building on an approach to sex education that was based on distrust—distrust of parents, distrust of the family, and distrust of other cultures," stated Emmett McGroarty, Director of Preserve Innocence, a non-profit initiative of the American Principles Project dedicated to protecting the innocence of children. "It is time for us to shake off the old approach and work together for programs that respect the sovereignty of the family and the primacy of parents in matters of sex and sexual morality."
Today marks the release of the newest Innocence Report, a regular publication of Preserve Innocence which can be viewed at www.preserveinnocence.org. The February Report examines the history of sex education in America, with special attention to its roots in the Progressive Era of the early twentieth century. As detailed in the Report, the drive to introduce sex education in our schools sprang from the belief that parents were unwilling or incapable of providing the proper guidance to their children on sexual issues. Though the content of sex education has changed over the past century, the idea that parents are obstacles in teaching children about sex lingers.
"No matter where you stand on what sex ed should be teaching, it's hard to argue with the value of involving parents more directly in their children's education," continued Mr. McGroarty. "But in order to be truly effective, we must start by acknowledging the wrongs of the past. Government programs must repudiate the old anti-parent approach and acknowledge that parents have the right to be the primary and principal directors of their children's sexual education."
Preserve Innocence is an initiative of the American Principles Project, a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to preserving and propagating the fundamental principles on which our country was founded.
