New Product Changes the Way Parents and Outdoor Enthusiasts Measure Individual Sun Exposure. Wrist Band Takes the Guessing-Game Out of Sunscreen Application
UV Sunscreen Bands™ created by JADS International make it easy and fun for children and adults to detect UV exposure and reminds you to reapply sunscreen. Product recently received seal of approval from the National Parenting Center.
HUNT VALLEY, Md., May 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- How much sun is too much sun? And when do you need to reapply sunscreen after initial application? Because the answers to these questions are not always clear, JADS International, LLC, a company producing health and beauty products, created a unique wrist band that helps consumers determine sun exposure and know when it's time to reapply sunscreen or seek shade. Sunscreen Bands™ recently received a seal of approval from the National Parenting Center.

Sunscreen Bands™ patented color changing technology detects the level of UVA & UVB rays based on the SPF level of an individual's sunscreen lotion, spray or cream. Users should always liberally apply sunscreen to sun exposed skin before going in the sun. Once in the sun, the user places the band around their wrist and when the band turns dark purple, they lather or spray sunscreen over the band. Bands are pink before they are exposed to sun and quickly turn dark purple upon immediate sun exposure to demonstrate activation and when to apply sunscreen to the bands. From dark purple, the bands turn light purple (lavender) as a reminder to reapply sunscreen. This occurs due to the sunscreen losing its strength to protect, thus allowing UV rays to turn the band to light purple (lavender). As the Sunscreen Bands packaging states, users need to check directions for use on their sunscreen label for reapplying directions. The bands gradually turn cream color to alert the wearer that they have reached maximum sun exposure for the day.
"We love our summers and spend the season at community pools, the beach, camps and barbeques where we are exposed to the sun. What most people don't know is that the intensity of UV radiation depends on a multitude of factors including altitude, latitude, season, air pollution, clouds in the sky. And, until now, determining sun exposure was somewhat of a guessing game for consumers," said Andrew Levine, Chief Executive Office of JADS. "With skin cancer on the rise, we wanted to create a product that would take sunscreen to the next level and keep people safe and in-the-know regarding the strength of the sun."
Not only are the bands an important sun protection tool, they are fun to wear. JADS partnered with Marvel, LIFEGUARD®, Alloy Entertainment and the Save The Ta-tas® Foundation to design fashionable bands that appeal to kids and adults alike. Designs include:
- Spiderman and The Hulk
- Gurl (a popular teen brand of Alloy Entertainment)
- LIFEGUARD
- Save the Ta-tas (Licensed by the Save the Ta-tas Foundation, proceeds from the sale of these bands support breast cancer awareness and research.)
- Sports – Football, soccer and golf
- Pet Paws (for animal lovers)
- Flowers (created for gardeners exposed to the sun)
- Peace and Love
The variety of Sunscreen Band designs make reapplying sunscreen amusing for kids and easier for parents. The bands take the guess work out of the reapplication process and provide peace of mind in knowing when someone has had enough sun exposure for the day. Sunscreen Bands also save parents money by not over-applying expensive sunscreen lotions, sprays or creams. Children enjoy watching the band change color and many will share the status of their band color change with caregivers.
Sunscreen Bands work in salt and pool water and are calibrated to work with all sunscreen lotions, creams, and sprays SPF 15 or higher. The bands can be recycled after use. JADS also offers private labeling and Sunscreen Band design and creation for schools, camps, companies or organizations.
Sunscreen Bands are currently being sold at Bed, Bath & Beyond and Giant Food locations. Bands are sold in packs of five and are also available for purchase on the website www.sunscreenbands.com.
