New Edition of the Hayes' Principles and Methods of Toxicology Provides Critical New Chapter on Food Safety and Foodborne Toxicants
IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- ChromaDex Corp. (OTCQB: CDXC), an innovative natural products company that provides proprietary ingredients and science-based solutions to the dietary supplement, food and beverage, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, has announced that two leaders of its Spherix Consulting affiliate, A. Wallace Hayes, Ph.D., senior science advisor, and Claire Kruger, Ph.D., president, served as editors for the sixth edition of the influential textbook, Hayes' Principles and Methods of Toxicology.
"This volume is a benchmark resource in the field," said Kruger, who co-authored the new food safety chapter with Hayes, as well as serving with Hayes as editor of the massive, 2,184-page volume. "Spherix Consulting's role in revising and updating the new edition of this volume – as well as authoring the exciting new food toxicology chapter – is a testimony to the company's expertise in the field of toxicology. We are honored to have played a part in creating a book that will be widely used by students and professionals around the world."
Hayes' Principles and Methods of Toxicology has long been one of the foremost references for the concepts, methodologies, and assessments integral to toxicology. New chapters in the sixth edition, which was published Sept. 5, deal with the importance of dose response, systems toxicology, food safety, the humane use and care of animals and neurotoxicology.
The new food safety chapter, "Food Safety and Foodborne Toxicants," was co-authored by Kruger, Hayes and Dietrich Conze, Ph.D., Spherix's senior science director, along with Chada Reddy, Ph.D., an associate professor at the University of Missouri Department of Biomedical Sciences. The chapter covers standards of safety and regulatory paths for food additives, GRAS substances and dietary supplements, with special emphasis on important issues in the field such as food allergy, foodborne toxicants, and naturally occurring toxins in the food supply.
Kruger has more than 25 years of consulting experience, with her primary area of expertise being in foods, consumer products and pharmaceuticals, where she provides scientific, regulatory and strategic support to clients in the U.S. and international regulatory arenas. Her clients include food, drug and dietary supplement manufacturers, agricultural producers, biotechnology companies, trade associations and law firms. Kruger is also an instructor at Harvard University. Hayes is a toxicologist with more than 35 years of experience in industry and academics. In his role as senior science advisor at Spherix, he provides strategic, scientific and regulatory guidance. He also holds appointments at the Harvard School of Public Health as a visiting scientist and with the School of Public Health, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is currently a member of the Food Advisory Committee, U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
