New City Comparison Tool Helps Job Seekers Looking to Relocate

MENLO PARK, Calif., July 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- With the cap and gown put away and a diploma framed on the wall, what is the next step in a recent graduate's career? A new interactive experience can help job seekers decide what city to settle in for their professional future. The Robert Half City Comparison Tool, based on recent research commissioned by Robert Half and developed by The Economist Intelligence Unit, compares 25 U.S. cities across four factors: career prospects, cost of living, quality of life and cultural diversity.

The research also revealed the top five highest-ranking career cities overall:

1. Seattle
2. Boston
3. San Francisco
4. Washington, D.C.
5. Raleigh   

"Recent graduates might think they need to jump straight into the workforce, but they should take care not to rush the process," said Paul McDonald, senior executive director at Robert Half. "If you're thinking of moving to a new city, consider all your options. Career opportunities are important, but also make sure your desired location has the culture, environment and price tag that fits your lifestyle."  

To further help recent alumni take the leap from the college classroom to the office, Robert Half's Student and New Graduate Center gives young professionals a foot in the door to new opportunities.

"Information is a powerful ally in the job search, particularly for those just starting their careers," said McDonald. "The job market varies from city to city, so it's important to understand the employment opportunities in place when you're thinking about relocating."

McDonald offers five tips for professionals who are considering moving for a job:

1. Do your homework. The City Comparison Tool is a great place to start researching where you'd like to live and work, but it's also important to evaluate specific job opportunities. Are there certain employers or industries that excite you? How do salaries compare for different positions and locations?
2. Get connected. If you don't have many contacts in a new city, this is a good time to practice your networking skills. Reach out to your university's local alumni community or a recruiter who is familiar with companies and opportunities in the area.
3. Navigate the hiring process. Prepare your elevator pitch, perfect your resume and put your best foot forward. Understand that your job search is a process and the perfect opportunity may not come right away, so don't be discouraged if it takes time. 
4. Consider temporary work. If you relocate to a new area before securing a job, check out temporary, freelance or project opportunities. These options can help you develop skills, earn valuable experience and make new contacts.
5. Always think ahead. Consider whether the city you plan to relocate to is where you want to stay for the longer term. Would you move again if an attractive opportunity arises? It's important to keep your personal and career goals in mind.
