Neshaminy Teachers Resume Full Array of School Activities, Issue Call for School Officials to Focus on Reaching Agreement
LANGHORNE, Pa., Nov. 15, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- On the first school day since ending their work-to-contract action, Neshaminy teachers returned to their classrooms today to take up an extensive array of activities in addition to their regular instructional duties.
Beginning today, NFT members are performing the extra duties that they take on for their students and the District -- including extracurricular activities, special events and college recommendations. Even while they were on limited schedules, teachers and staff throughout the school system helped organize and plan last week's Veterans Day observances and special lessons that are an annual event in Neshaminy schools.
"We have made our point that teachers and certified staff are indispensible to student learning and success," said Louise Boyd, president of the Neshaminy Federation of Teachers. "That's why we decided to end the work-to-contract action." She noted that 93.5 percent of NFT members supported ending the action, which began last spring.
The next bargaining session between NFT members and School District officials is scheduled for Dec. 2. Teachers have been working under a contract that expired in July 2008.
"It is the responsibility of the Board and District administrators to prioritize our school system's education goals and inform its staff," Boyd said. "Once they have done that, they must collaborate with teachers and certified staff in our schools to achieve those goals for Neshaminy students." She and other NFT members called on District officials to demonstrate their commitment to the bargaining process.
With their work action ended, Neshaminy teachers also said it is time for District officials to reappoint the school leadership and data teams that guide operations at each school in the system -- part of the extra responsibilities that teachers take on outside the classroom.
