Need for Personality-Based IoT Security Validated Throughout the Summer of 2017 and National Health IT Week
Vulnerabilities in Healthcare IT and IV Infusion Pump Hacks Reveal Gaps in Health IT
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- ZingBox, leading a new generation of IoT security solutions focused on IoT service protection, today announced its strengthened position from key vulnerabilities revealed this summer. This news comes during National Health IT Week, a nationwide awareness week focused on the value of healthcare IT.
"Recent cybersecurity incidents have raised overall concern for the ability of care providers to offer critical and uninterrupted services. Our partners and customers have seen the continued need for solutions like ours that are designed specifically for the unique requirements of IoT devices," said Xu Zou, co-founder and CEO, ZingBox. "National Health IT Week places a spotlight on the healthcare stakeholders to focus on the benefits health information technology can bring to the U.S. healthcare industry, enabling organizations to offer continuous and the highest care available to patients."
In July, a survey among IT decision makers in the healthcare industry revealed that most healthcare IT networks have IoT devices and that most IT departments believe that existing security solutions for laptops and servers can also protect connected medical devices. Later in July, a principal security researcher at ZingBox demonstrated the many ways an IV infusion pump can be hacked causing harm to patients connected to the pump as well as a conduit into hospital's internal network and valuable patient medical records.
In August, following WannaCry, NotPetya and other indicators of the need for IoT security, ZingBox, Dell Ventures Capital, and Triventures announced $22 million in funding of the company. ZingBox also announced a collaboration with VMware at VMworld to deliver enhanced security to enterprise Internet of Things (IoT) implementations. The Mirai attack last year was a wake-up call. It demonstrated the real-world impact of attacks targeting IoT devices. The recent WannaCry ransomware and NotPetya wiper ware incidents confirmed that the cybersecurity landscape is changing. Recognizing this key technology trend, ZingBox joined forces with VMware to properly safeguard an IoT environment that requires adding security at every level of the architecture: software, hardware, network and user.
In September, ZingBox was selected, among a host of other companies, for the Cybersecurity Breakthrough Award for "Overall IoT Security Provider Solution of the Year." ZingBox was also recognized by CRN as one of the Emerging Vendors in Internet of Things for 2017.
"ZingBox is the industry's first and only IoT security solution provider to leverage the individual personalities of IoT devices to provide accurate visibility and protection of an organization's IoT assets," said May Wang, CTO and co-founder of ZingBox. "Our recent selection as a winner of the Cybersecurity Breakthrough Award and recognition by CRN validates our approach in protecting organizations from a wide range of cyber-attacks."
IoT Guardian, ZingBox's SaaS-based security solution, leverages machine learning to discover, assess risk, baseline normal behavior, detect anomalous activities and provide real-time remediation across an organization's entire IoT footprint. The patent-pending solution has a deep grasp of each IoT device's personality, analyzing communication to and from every device, watching constantly for deviations in behavior and providing alerts for suspicious behavior.
