NC Law Firm Offers Help to Jones and Onslow County Residents Affected by US 17 Road Improvements
NC Eminent Domain Law Firm to host seminar, September 26th, to explain property owners' rights and how they might be able to get a "second check" for their property.
NEWBERN, N.C., Sept. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- "It's going right through the middle of our family farm…I've got to figure out a new occupation or how to make do with what's left."
Those are the words of Ken Parker of Pollocksville, third generation farmer of Parker Farms, as he was quoted in the Sun Journal on September, 2012.
He and more than 40 other families are in the path of a 16-mile project along U.S. 17 in Jones and Onslow counties, which includes widening the highway to a four-lane divided highway and creating bypasses around Pollocksville, Belgrade and Maysville.
In response to these changes, the NC Eminent Domain Law Firm is holding a complimentary seminar for residents whose land will be taken by the project. The seminar will be held at 7:00pm on Thursday, September 26th in the Tryon Room of the Hampton Inn in New Bern (200 Hotel Drive).
"Over and over again North Carolina residents have told us that they didn't realize how the eminent domain process works and what kind of help might be available to them," said NC eminent domain attorney Stan Abrams. "Seminars, like this one, are our way of extending help to residents so they can at least make an informed decision."
Abrams and his colleague Jason Campbell are both former attorneys for the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT). They have been studying the affected properties and will lead the complimentary seminar.
"The seminar will cover information about the eminent domain process, we'll examine what issues each property owner might face based on their specific property," said Campbell. "We'll also tell them about our Second Check system – which basically provides property owners with a way to receive the government's first offer and then negotiate for more, thereby reducing their risk of getting less for their property."
Topics covered include:
- How are NCDOT offers calculated?
- What is "fair market value"?
- What if my space is leased? Will there be any relocation benefits?
- Can I assume the offer for my property is fair?
