The Navy League, a nonprofit citizens' organization that educates the public about the critical importance of sea power and the need for a strong Navy, was formed 113 years ago in New York City with the encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt. The principal programs of the New York Council, the Navy League's founding chapter, include support of active duty personnel through such activities as welcoming thousands of sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel during ship visits to New York and maintaining educational excellence in the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, Young Marines and Sea Cadet programs. The New York Council's monthly breakfast briefing about "The New Ways of War," open to the public and now in its second year, focuses on advanced weapons systems and shifting geostrategic factors that will shape U.S. national security planning in the future. The Council's annual Commodore John Barry Book Award, also in its second year, recognizes significant contributions to American maritime literature.
