Nation's Largest Collection of Privately Billed Healthcare Claims Reaches 20 Billion Records
FAIR Health Database Fuels Cost Transparency
NEW YORK, April 12, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- FAIR Health, a leading national independent nonprofit organization that advances system-wide healthcare cost transparency through consumer resources, data products and health services research support, announced today that its claims repository crossed the threshold of 20 billion medical and dental services billed through private insurance.
Including claims dating back to 2002, the FAIR Health repository adds approximately 1.4 billion additional records each year, contributed by most of the country's largest commercial insurers and third-party administrators (TPAs). Payors contributing those claims insure a significant portion of the populace and provide detailed data on services performed in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. FAIR Health also maintains a separate database that includes an additional 4.5 billion records FAIR Health has received from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
FAIR Health's repository offers a conflict-free, trusted and transparent source of healthcare cost data. The vast database supports the organization in fulfilling its cost transparency mission by powering an award-winning, free consumer website available in English (www.fairhealthconsumer.org) and Spanish (www.consumidor.fairhealth.org), which enables consumers to estimate and plan their medical and dental expenditures, and offers educational resources to support health literacy. The database also is used to support research into cost and utilization trends, geographic disparities in treatment protocols, the impact of regulation and legislation on health systems delivery and is the foundation for data products used by insurers, providers, policymakers and others to gain insight into the healthcare industry and support operational needs, such as fee schedule development, provider network and benefits design, dispute resolution and claims processing.
"FAIR Health is proud to serve as the steward of this unmatched, independent healthcare data resource," stated FAIR Health President Robin Gelburd. "An early provider of actionable medical and dental claims data, we have kept pace with the rapidly changing healthcare system by creating innovative data products and tools that continue to serve as the official data source for numerous state programs and provide consumers and all other stakeholders with access to the information they need, in the medium and format that suits them best."
