National University and San Diego Padres to honor Military Scholarship Recipients July 5 at Petco Park
National University's Military Appreciation Night includes a reception thanking military guests and community leaders during Saturday game vs. San Francisco Giants
SAN DIEGO, Calif., June 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In recognition of our military community, National University and the San Diego Padres will honor ten inaugural recipients of the National University Military Scholarship at the July 5th game against the San Francisco Giants. National University will also host a reception on top of the Western Metal Building during the game to thank military guests and community leaders. In advance of the celebrations, a new, iconic National University Picnic Terrace sign has been installed above the home and away bullpens — one of the largest signs visible inside the seating bowl.
In addition to the military honors, the July 5th game also features a Padres Beach Bag giveaway presented by National University for all fans, and recognitions for the university's staff and faculty. The special events are part of a partnership that makes National University the exclusive higher education partner of the San Diego Padres and officially adopts the Padres as the university's home team. As a result of that relationship, National University is holding its own Military Appreciation Night during the game with the planned military-focused activities.
"We are very proud to recognize our military community through our partnership with the Padres, and the National University Military Scholarship Program extends our commitment to advancing lifelong learning opportunities," said National University President Michael R. Cunningham. "National University is dedicated to ensuring the military community has access to a quality education program that provides them with relevant, challenging training that supports their continued successes."
The National University Military Scholarship Program recognizes currently enrolled National University students who live in San Diego, are active duty military or veterans, and who have demonstrated sustained educational success and leadership. About 24 percent of the university's students are prior service or active military. Many began taking National University courses at military bases where the university has a presence, or through the university's other locations and online programs. National University also offers academic support services to its military population through the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success, the result of a competitive grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education (FIPSE).
"The Padres are proud to provide a platform for National University to honor our local military through the announcement of the recipients of the National University Military Scholarship," said Padres President and CEO Mike Dee. "The educational component of our partnership with National University is a wonderful complement to our longstanding military appreciation efforts and our existing program."
