Monetate Influences a Third of U.S. Ecommerce Sales During Record-Breaking Cyber Week 2014; Ecommerce Emerges as Holiday Hero for Retailers
Ecommerce bolstered by extended deals, increased mobile buying and browsing, and the globalization of the U.S. holiday shopping season
PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Monetate, the leading provider of multi-channel personalization to the world's best retail brands, announced today that its platform influenced a third of total U.S. ecommerce sales (or one in every three dollars) during Cyber Week 2014 – the holiday shopping season comprising Black Friday through Cyber Monday. comScore reported that Cyber Monday 2014 was the single biggest online shopping day in history, jumping 17 percent over last year with $2 billion in sales. Furthermore, comScore reported Cyber Week sales grew 24 percent over last year to $6.6 billion.
Cyber Week Has Arrived
Last year saw major retailers shifting online deals earlier into the season, encroaching on Black Friday and introducing Thanksgiving Day sales in what is now commonly referred to as "Grey Thursday." The trend continued this year, with retailers stretching the online shopping season well beyond Cyber Monday. This shift led to an extension of the online holiday deal season, transforming Cyber Monday into "Cyber Week" as Monetate predicted at the close of 2013.
"As we predicted last year, online holiday shopping has evolved from a concentration on Black Friday and Cyber Monday to a virtual season of digital discounts and deals," said Lucinda Duncalfe, CEO, Monetate. "Meanwhile, holiday shopping is continuing to shift from the mall to online. Retailers can offer better, more personalized shopping experiences digitally now, and consumers are responding with record spending online during Cyber Week."
Mobile Shines, But Desktops are Alive and Well
Cyber Week 2014 saw mobile traffic increase more than 50 percent, mobile purchases increase more than 45 percent and mobile revenue increase more than 20 percent over last year.
"Mobile came into its own this holiday season," Duncalfe continued, "as consumers finally used their smartphones and tablets for holiday shopping. Looking ahead to 2015, we expect continued mobile traffic growth and for retailers to focus on the mobile experiences they create in order to drive up purchase rates from that new traffic. To succeed in mobile next year, retailers will have to understand their customers' mobile behaviors and tailor mobile experiences to them."
Despite the dramatic impact of mobile on Cyber Week, traditional desktops and laptops still claimed the majority of traffic and sales. Desktops drove more than 55 percent of traffic and 73 percent of online sales with an average order value (AOV) of $156.72 (up 0.2 percent from last year).
U.S. Shopping Season Goes Global
Online shopping traffic increased in the UK year over year by 32.30 percent on Thanksgiving (versus 3 percent in the U.S.), 84.40 percent on Black Friday (versus .90 percent in the U.S.) and 20.80 percent on Cyber Monday (versus 11.80 percent in the U.S). Meanwhile, the number of purchases made online this 2014 holiday season increased in the UK year over year by 39.50 percent on Thanksgiving, 109.90 percent on Black Friday and 30 percent on Cyber Monday.
"2014 is the year that the U.S. shopping season went global. Online sales patterns abroad have started to mirror the U.S. cyber week spikes, particularly in key regions including the UK," said Duncalfe. "Traffic and sales are growing almost 10 times as fast in the UK as in the U.S. – with the strongest growth on Black Friday and Cyber Monday."
